Max Pollak (California, New York / Austria, 1886 - 1970) Etching Titled "New York: Wallstreet". Pencil signed and numbered (43/150) in lower margin. Pollak exhibited at the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939 and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in 1940. He won California Society of Etchers awards in 1942, 1944, and 1945, as well as a Chicago Society of Etchers award in 1942. He continued to travel nationally?to Cincinnati, New Orleans, Chicago, and the east coast?and abroad to Guatemala and Mexico. Finally, Pollak settled in Sausalito, CA. The work of Dendy Sadler was exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1873 through the 1890's. His subjects were usually set in the late 18th or early 19th-centuries with sentimental, romantic and humorous themes. Several of his paintings are in museum collections. A rare, early double-sided vellum figure depicting the infernal apparition Mephistopheles and the lovely Marguerite, who holds a prayer book and wears an ivory dress detailed in gilt. The inspiration was Henry Irving and Ellen Terry's roles of the same names in the play Faust. The figure may have in turn inspired a 1928 aquatint etching by the French artist Louis Icart (1880-1950), entitled Faust: Devil and Woman. Cream celluloid grip, with full wire wrap, rotating large symbol & oakleaf pommel, with eagle aluminium cross guard. Very good condition Clemen & Jung of Solingen marked 26 cm long blade, retaining leather washer. Blade shows etchings to both sides, showing foliate patterns, eagle & symbol, with für langjährige treue Dienste der Generalstab (remembrance time in the General Staff) inscription. In our opinions, this may be a post-war etching. Blade fits perfectly into the toned nickel-plated, pebbled scabbard.

Polished gilt lion’s head pommel, with mane backstrap, worn ray skin grip with wire wrap and gilt brass guard (period-straightened) showing the fouled anchor & crown, with folding/locking langet. 77 cm slightly curved nickel blade, shows etching to both sides of fouled anchors, royal crown, etc., in good condition, with the usual pitting wear, maker-marked for Matthews & Co. of Portsea. Leather scabbard shows twin brass lockets with twin suspension rings, with light service wear to fully stitched leather body. Overall length: 94 cm.
