John Charles Bromley (English, 1795-1838) A Shepherdess on a Donkey with a Greyhound Beside signed upper left J C Bromley fecit 1808, aged 13 years etching 24 x 19cm John Charles Bromley was one of a family of four, all were noted engravers in line and mezzotint. He engraved the present study when he was 13. It is a copy in reverse of an etching by Nicolas Berchem (1620-1683) called the Shepherdess on a Donkey (Hollstein 12), at the time (1808) it would have been a natural choice for a trainee copyist
