Jennifer Joan DICKSON (1936) Aphrodite Celeste Photo etching, hand-tinted in watercolour Limited edition 4/20 Signed and stamped Image size 31cm x 21cm Jennifer Dickson CM RA, a South African-born British photographer, was born in Piet Retief, South Africa, on September 17, 1936. She studied at Goldsmiths College in England from 1954 to 1959 and later apprenticed under Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris, France, from 1960 to 1965. In 1962, she held her first solo exhibition in London. Afterward, she taught at the Brighton College of Art, where she established a graduate program in printmaking and photography. In 1968, she became a visiting fellow at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica, and in 1969, she emigrated to Canada. In Montreal, Quebec, she became the director of the graphics program at the Saidye Bronfman Centre. She became a Royal Academician in 1976 and currently resides in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and her work is featured in the collections of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the National Gallery of Canada. Additionally, she was honoured as a Member of the Order of Canada in 1995. The current vendors had this provenance to add: “In the early to mid-1980s, I was reconnected with a former teacher of mine, Edward Monaghan, who had since transitioned into a distinguished career as an art agent. Edward, knowing our keen interest in art, introduced us to Jennifer, a Royal Academician whose work we had long admired. Jennifer was in London for her annual participation in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, was showcasing her latest pieces – a requirement for her prestigious role as a Royal Academician. We got to know Jennifer and, as avid admirers of her work, my wife Susie and I were thrilled when Edward proposed hosting an exhibition of Jennifer's art at our Chelsea home. We displayed her collection for six months before the exhibition, a period during which our appreciation deepened profoundly. Ultimately, we acquired 15 pieces from this collection and the initial acquisition laid the foundation for the rest of our collection which we continued to expand over the years.” Postage for this lot is available to the UK for £21.76.
