Avinash Chandra (Indian, 1931-1991) Composition artist's proof and numbered 1/1, and signed "Avin1974" etching, unframed 69 x 54cm (27 x 21in) Other Notes: Avinash Chandra was an Indian painter, born in Simla in 1931. He studied painting at Delhi Polytechnic, 1947-52, and afterwards taught there in 1953. He was awarded a prize in the First National Exhibition of Art, New Delhi in 1954. Chandra moved to London in 1956 and had his first British one-man exhibition at the Imperial Institute, London, in 1957. At first he painted jagged Indian townscapes and landscapes, then in the early 1960s he became increasingly preoccupied with the female body, and made images of interlocking figures and sexual imagery, partly in the tradition of Indian erotic art. He made a fibre-glass mural for the Indian Tea Centre, London, in 1964 and a glass mural for Chappell Music Publishing Company in London in 1966. He was awarded a John D. Rockefeller 3rd Fund Fellowship in 1965 and lived in New York from 1966-73 before returning to London. Chandra's work can be found in such collections as Tate Britain Unframed and with a little foxing, mainly along the bottom edge. One small bump/tear about a thrid of the way down in the middle.
