§ Anthony Gross, RA, CBE (British, 1905-1984) Farguettes, a shepherdess minding her flock signed lower right "Anthony Gross" etching 31 x 49cm (12 x 19in) Anthony Gross was an English painter and printmaker who trained in Paris, Madrid and London from 1923-1925, before deciding to make France his home. Although he created a few animated films between 1931 and 1939 including the "Fox Hunt" and "The Nativity", possibly his most notable achievement was in the Second World War. Gross was commissioned as a temporary captain in 1941, continuing on to India, travelled up a river in Burma by sampan to the British front lines in Arakan. He then accompanied the D-Day landings in Normandy on the 6th June 1944 striding ashore Gold Beach apparently holding his sketchbooks and canvasses above his head. A little browning.
§ Henry Moore (British, 1898-1986) Tiger, 1982 c.644, 1982, signed in pencil lower right "Moore" and inscribed "PL.A 10/15" etching printed in red ochre on Arches paper, with full margins 35 x 41cm (14 x 16in) Literature: "The Animals in the Zoo" portfolio, published by the Henry Moore Foundation, Much Hadham, Hertfordshire. Under plastic which is cracked - image is good and clear.
§ Henry Moore (British, 1898-1986) Tiger, 1982 c.643, 1982, signed in pencil lower right "Moore" and numbered "PL.X 10/65", sold with the case that accompanied the original book (set 10/5) (2) etching on Arches paper with full margins 27 x 30cm (11 x 12in) Literature: "The Animals in the Zoo" portfolio, published by the Henry Moore Foundaiton, Much Hadham, Hertfordshire. Image is clear and good.
§ Valerie Thornton (British, 1931-1991) The Guild Hall, Lavenham, Suffolk signed lower right "Valerie Thornton '77" and numbered 39/250 etching and aquatint 37 x 50cm (14 x 20in) Valerie Thornton studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art from 1950-1953. In 1954 she went to Paris and studied printmaking with the renowned print maker Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. Thornton then moved to New York studying at the Pratt Institute. Her first exhibition was held in 1960 followed by shows in England and America. Valerie Thornton loved the churches of East Anglia and in the 1970s made etchings of ecclesiastical and architectural subjects, travelling extensively in France, Italy and Spain. Valerie Thornton's work is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Condition appears fine.
§ Tom McGuiness (British, 1926-2006) Night shift stone men; and Paynote day both signed lower right "Tom McGuiness" and the etching numbered 29/50 ink and mixed media; and etching (2) 16 x 24cm (6 x 9in) Exhibited: "Tom McGuiness, A Way of Life", The Broughton House Gallery, 98 King Street, Cambridge, 10 September 1994. Lots of flies under the glass. Inscription is faint. Images good.
