Er war ab 1900 zusammen mit F. Ahlers-Hestermann Schüler von A. Siebelist. 1904 trat er dem Hamburgischen Künstlerclub bei, 1907 wurde er auf Vorschlag von K. Schmidt-Rottluff kurzzeitig Mitglied der 'Brücke'. Nach einer Ausstellung mit den Brücke-Künstlern in Dresden 1909 ging er gemeinsam mit Ahlers-Hestermann und W. Rosam nach Paris, um Unterricht bei H. Matisse zu nehmen. Die Hamburger Sammler E. Rump und O. Troplowitz, der Besitzer von Beiersdorf, erkannten früh sein Talent und förderten ihn; der Komponist M. Franz Eichhorst (1885 Berlin - 1948 Innsbruck)Betende Tiroler Bergbauern unter einem Bildstock1929 entstandene Szene aus dem Volksleben vor einer Hochalpenlandschaft. Eichhorst studierte bei Friedrich Kallmorgen an der Hochschule für die Bildenden Künste in Berlin. 1909 erhielt er auf der Großen Berliner Kunstausstellung eine kleine Goldmedaille. Ab den frühen 1920er Jahren malte er während der Sommermonate in einem Atelier in Matrei in Osttirol, das für ihn zur zweiten Heimat wurde. In der Weimarer Republik beschickte er häufig die Großen Berliner Kunstausstellungen und die Akademie-Ausstellungen; ab 1933 gehörte Eichhorst zu den favorisierten Künstlern des "Dritten Reiches": 1937-1943 war er mit 56 Bildern auf den Großen Deutschen Kunstausstellungen in München vertreten, 1938 erhielt er von Hitler den Titel eines Professors.
