George Cruikshank (1792 - 1878), "The Christmas Shopping Expedition", signed, watercolour, 12 x 9cm.; 4.75 x 3.5in; and another, "Bringing Back the Christmas Goose", signed, watercolour, 12 x 9cm.; 4.75 x 3.5in (2). * He was largely self-taught and published his first etching aged about twelve. In 1836 his connection with Harrison Ainsworth and with Dickens began and his drawings for these two authors are among his best. He illustrated many books including Dicken's 'Sketches by Boz' but was best known for his cartoons on moral and social themes, such as 'The British Bee Hive', 'London going out of Town' etc. He was also a militant member of the Temperance League and the evil of drink was the theme of many cartoons. He also painted an enormous picture packed with figures entitled 'The Workshop of Bacchus'; it was exhibited at Exeter Hall in 1863 and is now in the Tate Gallery. As well as an etcher and watercolourist, he was a competent oil painter and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy.

(fl. early/mid 20th century), "On the Pagoda Platform", signed in pencil in the margin, etching, 25.5 x 15cm.; 10 x 6in; "Boats and Palace", signed in ink in the margin, etching, 25 x 30cm.; 9.75 x 11.75in; "Srinagar", signed in ink in the margin and inscribed in pencil, etching, 16 x 35cm.; 6.25 x 13.75in (4). * Job Nixon was born in Stoke on Trent, he studied at Burslem School of Art, The R.C.A. and at the Slade.
Dame Laura Knight R.A., R.W.S., R.E. (1877 - 1970), "The Sleeping Darkie", signed and numbered 36/50 in pencil in the margin, woodcut, 25.5 x 19cm.; 10 x 7.5in. * Painter, etcher, aquatint, mezzotint and wood engraver of figure subjects and landscapes. Born in Derbyshire, she studied at Nottingham School of Art and at the Royal College of Art. She married Harold Knight in 1903 and lived in Yorkshire, Cornwall and London. Her use and combination of all the etching and engraving methods show her interest in technique.
