CRUIKSHANK GEORGE: (1792-1878) British Caricaturist & Book Illustrator, associated with the works of his friend Charles Dickens. Manuscript D.S., Geo. Cruikshank, in the third person, at the head, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., 5th August 1835. The document is in the form of an invoice made out to Messrs. Blackwood & Sons for 'Designing & Etching 8 subjects to illustrate…..at 6 Guineas each', totalling £50.8.0. Neatly inlaid and with some very light, extremely minor creasing to the edges, otherwise VG  William Blackwood & Sons was a Scottish publishing house and printer founded by William Blackwood in 1804. It played an important role in literary history publishing works by many significant authors including George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Joseph Conrad and E. M. Forster, both in books and the monthly Blackwood's Magazine.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)Le Chapeau Épinglé (1re Plance) (see Delteil 6, Stella 6)The rare and previously unrecorded drypoint printing with rich burr, printed in dark brown ink, 1894-95, a unique proof printed before steel-facing and the bevelling of the plate, on laid paper, with full margins, 120 x 85mm (4 3/4 x 3 1/3in) (unframed)Both Delteil and Stella had only seen impressions of this work printed after the plate was steel-faced and mistakenly assumed the work to be an etching. This previously unknown impression printed prior to the steel-facing displays extremely rich burr and a delicate veil of plate tone, and thus we can unquestionably state that the work is indeed a drypoint engraving rather than an etching.

She taught for a time at the California School of Fine Arts alongside Clyfford Still and Richard Diebenkorn, and 1950 she moved to Paris where she studied engraving under Stanley William Hayter at Atleier 17 after it had re-located to Paris post war. Whilst at Atelier 17 she worked alongside Jean Arp, Alberto Giacometti Sam Francis and Paul Jenkins, and it was there that she became most associated with Art Informel. One of her most recognisable works are the New Gates of Paradise which were commissioned by her friend Peggy Guggenheim for the entrance to her Palazzo on the Grand Canal, now known as the Guggenheim Venice.
