BEATRICE PRINCESS: (1857-1944) Fifth daughter & youngest child of Queen Victoria. A.L.S., Beatrice, three pages, 8vo, Balmoral, 19th October 1878, to [Theodore] Martin, on the attractive monogrammed stationery of the Princess. Beatrice writes on behalf of her mother, explaining that 'we are all very desirous to have an engraving made after Angeli's picture of our lamented Sir Thomas Biddulph' and continuing to add that the Queen 'thinks that Mr. Hall could perhaps do a vignetted head larger, but not so highly finished as those of the Royal Family. If it could be more in the style of an etching, it would not be so expensive, as the Queen would prefer not going beyond £35 to £40.' The Princess further states 'The heads of Grant & Brown, intended for the Queen's book, were only 25 guineas, therefore if something could be done more slightly & rather larger, surely 10 or 15 guineas more would suffice. Would you kindly let the Queen have an answer about this as soon as possible.'
