* Gillray (James). The Plumb-pudding in danger; - or - State Epicures taking un Petit Souper...., pub. H. Humphrey, Feb. 26th. 1805, [but H. Bohn edition, 1847], uncoloured etching, 265 x 270mm. Arguably Gillray’s most famous caricature showing William Pitt and Napolean Bonaparte slicing into a globe, with Napolean cutting away Europe and Pitt slicing of the Americas. (1)

Lot 898

* Gillray (James). The French Invasion; - or - John Bull bombarding the Bum-Boats, pub. H. Humphrey Nov. 5th. 1793 [but H. Bohn edition of c. 1847], uncoloured etching, 355 x 250mm, together with, Britannia, pub. H.Humphrey, June 25th 1791 [but H.Bohn edition, 1847], uncoloured etching, slight water stain, 265 x 195mm. The ‘French Invasion’ caricature was one of Gillray’s most famous ‘supressed’ plates. Its scurrilous, vulgar and offensive portrayal of George III defecating on France was deemed too crude even for the bawdy tastes of Regency England. Ironically it was not one of the several caricatures by Gillray which offended the King, and it has became a highly sort after image of English defiance against French tyranny. (2)

Lot 899

* Gillray (James). The Cow-Pock - or - the Wonderful Effects of the New Innoculation, pub. H. Humphry June 12th. 1802 [but later H. H.Humphrey, May 23rd. 1802 [but later H.Bohn edition 1847], uncoloured etching, slight water staining, 250 x 360mm. Two satirical cartoons with a medical theme.’The Cow-Pock’ shows Edward Jenner inoculating a woman against smallpox. (2)

Lot 900

* Gillray (James). Fashionable Contrasts; - or - The Duchess’s little shoe yeilding to the Magnitude of the Duke’s Foot, pub. H. Humphry Jan. 24th 1792 [but later edition by H. Bohn, 1847], uncoloured etching, 255 x 355mm. A ‘supressed’ print which was aimed at the sycophancy of the press who had waxed lyrical about the daintiness of the feet of Charlotte Duchess of York. The more unkind might well have retorted that there was little else to commend the Duchess other than her feet. The print simply shows two pairs of feet and ankles quite clearly in the ‘missionary’ position, with the Duke’s feet enlarged and the Duchess’s feet drawn very small. Simple yet devastating in puncturing the pomposity which surrounded the engagement of the Prince of Wales. (1)
