A Minton porcelain shaped oval presentation dish, decorated in sepia with a vignette of two oxen, inscribed verso Etching on Porcelain after Karl Du Jardin, finished for & presented to Thomas Baring Esq. MP. and October 1868, within a `jewelled` and gilt band border, 31cm in length, GWJ monogram, Minton impressed marks. Thomas Baring, (1799-1873) was a partner of Barings Bank from 1828 until his death. He inherited Norman Court in Hampshire and was the Tory Member for Great Yarmouth (1835-7) and Huntingdon (1844-73). He was in addition Chairman of Lloyd`s, a Director of the Bank of England and a Commissioner for the Great Exhibition of 1851. It is speculation, but the monogram is in the style and form of that of George Jones who often bought Minton and Wedgwood ceramics among others for retail both here and abroad.
