Provenance: Acquired directly from Felix Paul Klee. Overall size: 10 3/8 x 8 1/2 in. (264 x 216 mm). Please note that the original image was created as an etching by Klee in 1905. At a later date the original etching was used to create this lithograph, hence the very low pre-sale estimates. This edition was authorized by Klee shortly before his death in 1940 but delayed by World War II until after the war. It was printed under the immediate supervision of Klee's son, Felix Paul Klee (1907-1990), a prominent art historian and later the director of the Paul Klee Foundation. Collection of Valentines and associated ephemera, comprising: four mid-Victorian hand-coloured lithographic Valentines with paper lace borders; a handmade card on paper (folded) with handwritten romantic verse and central applied watercolour flower; an early novelty postcard with applied silk bows, 'From a "Beau" who loves you', inscribed in pencil from 'George' to 'Emily' and apologising for not being able to travel to Warwick tomorrow; 'General Heartsease', hand-coloured botanical etching with comic text explaining how this illustration represents 'correct likenesses' of the Prince Regent, Duke of Wellington, Emperor of Austria and others, published in London by G. Smeeton, 13 May 1815; a novelty banknote, 'Bank of Love, Temple of Hymen, 14 February 1847'; 'Copy of a Curious Love Letter', c.1850 pamphlet printed on very fine paper, appears abusive but the secret code is explained by the (anonymous) publisher: read every second line to get the true message of love; a novelty "trade card" for Cupid, 'Manufacturer & Promoter of Marriages', c.1850 (10)
Late-Georgian keepsake box (possibly for a Valentine) constructed from card and pink paper, oblong octagonal form with drawer, mirrored top featuring inset hand-coloured etching depicting lady with two children and dog ('La Petite Jalouse'), applied embossed paper borders, lined with lilac and pastel pink paper. The box contains a quantity of fans, 19th century and later, including a mechanical greetings card in the form of a fan, 'The Language of Flowers - Happy New Year'

A 19th-century watercolour depiction of a lady holding a love letter, a spaniel at her feet and cupid seated atop a plinth, presented in verre eglomise frame, 25cm by 19cm, together with a pair of 18th-century oval stipple engravings in gilt frames with titles/publisher pasted to verso ('Love' and 'Harmony', W. Palmer, 14 February 1782), and a hand-coloured etching depicting cupid grinding arrows (4)
