Tuileries Palace is in the background, and the caption indicates that 8,000 spectators were present.

Ballooning.- First crossing of the English Channel by air.- Rowlandson (Thomas) Departure of Blanchard and Jeffries' Balloon from Dover, January 7, 1785, etching with full hand-colouring, on thick wove paper with watermark of Strasbourg lily, sheet 214 x 314 mm (8 1/4 x 12 1/4 in), possibly laid onto support, trimmed to borderline of image, minor spotting and surface dirt, unframed, [S.W. Fores, 1794]⁂ On January 7, 1785, the French balloonist Jean-Pierre Blanchard and his American backer John Jeffries travelled from Dover to Calais in a gas balloon, becoming the first to cross the English Channel by air.

Experiments and Adventures in the Atmopshere, Chapman and Hall, 1865, illus. p. 262⁂ Showing James Sadler's balloon flight to mark the birthday of George, Prince of Wales (later George IV) on 12th August 1811. He took off from the gardens of the Mermaid Tavern in Hackney, along with Captain Paget of the Royal Navy, who was a paying passenger, and landed near Tilbury Fort 73 minutes later.

The Chinese Bridge and Pagoda with the Tents in St James Park, soft-ground etching printing with plate tone on laid paper with small armorial watermark, platemark 255 x 320 mm (10 x 12 1/2 in), sheet 295 x 350 mm (11 5/8 x 13 3/4 in), handling creases, minor marginal nicks, unframed, September 16th, 1814⁂ The Prince Regent (and future King George IV) declared a Grand Jubilee in celebration of the recent victory over Napoleon and to mark a centenary of Hanoverian rule. English aeronaut Windham Sadler ascended in the balloon which can be seen flying overhead.
