KÜNSTLER DES XVIII JH. "Hochzeitszug" 1749 Radierung, HxB: ca. 98/75 cm. Rahmen, HxB: 104/83cm. OF THE XVIII TH CENTURY ‘Wedding procession’ 1749Etching, HxW: 104/83 cm. (with frame) Normal signs of age and wear.Provenance: Andreas Henn-Kunsthandel-Stuttgart.In 1744 Duke Carl Eugen came of age at the age of 16 and was betrothed to the 12-year-old Elisabeth Sophie Friederike Margravine of Bayreuth-Brandenburg, whom Voltaire described as ‘certainly the most beautiful child in Europe’. The wedding took place in Bayreuth in 1748. To mark the bride and groom's entry into Ludwigsburg, opulent fireworks were held in front of Favorite Palace on 9 October with 3,600 rockets, ‘... and the whole area of the Pheasant Garden was illuminated by many thousands of traffic lights’, as Wilhelm Friedrich Schönhaar noted in ‘Ausführliche Beschreibung des zu Bayreuth im September 1748 vorgegangenen Fürstlichen Beylagers Carls Herzog zu Württemberg und Elisabethe Friderice Sophie, geb. Marg-Gräfin zu Brandenburg’ in 1749. The publication was accompanied by the etching with the ‘wedding procession’, which is adorned at the top with a view of Stuttgart and the portraits of the Duke and his young wife. The inscription also names various buildings - including the New Palace, which had been under construction since 1746 - as well as ‘24 canons planted on the Gans haide for saluting’ at the top left.
