* BARBARA RAE CBE RA RSA RE (SCOTTISH b. 1943), HIGHLAND FENCE limited edition etching and aquatint on paper, signed, titled, dated '93 and dated 20/40mounted, framed and under glassimage size 40cm x 45cm, overall size 71cm x 76cm Note: Painter, printmaker and teacher, born in Stirlingshire. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art 1961–5 concluding with postgraduate study, in 1966 using a travelling scholarship to work in France and Spain. In 1966–7 was at Moray House College of Education, then taught in Edinburgh Schools until appointments 1972–4 at Aberdeen College of Education, then from 1975 at Glasgow School of Art. In 1984 she was an exchange teacher at University of Maryland. Won a number of awards and prizes, including Arts Council Awards and RSA Guthrie Award and Medal. In 1985 she gained a Scottish Arts Council Grant which permitted her to paint in Spain and New Mexico. Rae was an extremely prolific exhibitor internationally and from 1967, when she had her first solo show at New 57 Gallery, in Edinburgh, was regular at venues including Aberdeen Art Gallery; Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh and London; and Glasgow Print Studio. Her work is in several dozen collections, including Aberdeen Art Gallery, University of Glasgow and British Museum. Rae was a striking landscape painter with a rich palette, yet her pictures sometimes have an intense, brooding quality. Was elected RSA, and RA in 1996. Over the next few years Rae travelled extensively and in 2002 had a residency at Ballinglen Arts Foundation, County Mayo, Ireland. The North House Gallery, Manningtree, put on Barbara Rae Ten Years’ Printmaking in 2004, the first such major survey. In the same year she had a solo show at Tom Caldwell Gallery, Belfast, with another, Mayo, of monotypes and colour etchings in 2006. In 2003, Aberdeen University conferred an Hon. Doctorate on Rae and the Royal College of Art an Hon. Fellowship.

In 1976 he moved back to Scotland, joining a team of many talents at the Glasgow Print Studio. John Taylor, a colleague and long-time friend, says: "Tom MacKenzie’s art was made from the Isle of Skye’s unique cornucopia of visual riches: the huge, notched and jagged coastline; sea lochs with many rocky islands; the Cuillins, the most awesome mountains in Britain." Living and working on the lovely Isle of Skye, Tom MacKenzie was renowned for his wonderful colour etchings of the island and the West Coast of Scotland. These large and very stylish etchings are appreciated and collected worldwide. Working from his studio and workshop in Portree, the island’s capital, Mackenzie used three steel plates to produce his etchings and limited the editions to 75 or less, printed on 300gm, Arches waterleaf paper. Eduard Wiiralt (Estonian, 1898-1954). Copperplate etching on paper titled "Kabaree (Cabaret)" depicting an intense surrealist view of a crowded club, 1931. Ink signed along the lower right; inscribed "Cabaret - eau forte 1931" along the lower left. Inscribed in pencil along the verso "19 III 1948 Soome Paber."Reference: Kangilaski 59.Height: 23 in x width: 26 in.Condition: The sheet is toned, more so along the perimeter of the image, likely due to a previous framing. There is a crease in the lower left corner and a small loss to the extreme edge of this corner. There is a loss to the upper right corner and a crease. There is a clear piece of tape along the center edge of the etching which covers a tear. There is a smaller tear just to the right of this piece of tape. There is a tear along the upper center edge which extends from the edge of the sheet down to the edge of the image. Signs of moisture exposure to the upper left edge and the lower edge. Undulation to the sheet throughout. Along the verso there are a few areas of skimming corresponding to old areas of tape. One piece of old framer's tape along the lower left corner. Three pieces of clear tape corresponding to tears. Areas of moisture exposure running horizontally through the center of the work and along the lower edge. The work is not framed.

Harmony Hammond (American, b. 1944). Group of five prints.
