MAXIME MAUFRA (FRENCH 1861-1918) Paris and the Pont Neuf seen from St-Cloudoil on canvas 50 x 65 cm (19 3/4 x 25 5/8 in.) signed lower right PROVENANCE Gallery Keops, GenevaAcquired from the above by the present owner, circa 1987-1989 LOT NOTES Maxime Maufra was born in Nantes France a city on the Loire in 1861. Maufra started early in his artistic career at the age of eighteen. Maufra was inspired by two artists from Nantes, the Leduc brothers, Charles and Alfred, and the famed landscape painter Charles Le Roux. While inspired by these artists, Maufra did not start a career as a painter, painting only in his spare time from 1884-1890, during this period he discovered works from Impressionists and displayed his paintings at the Paris Salon in 1886. By 1890 Maufra decided to embrace painting as a full-time career, leaving Nantes for Pont-Aven in the Finistere of Brittany, here is where he met Paul Gauguin and Paul Serusier. Maufra had his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1894, at Le Barc de Toutteville. Traveling back to Brittany each year, exploring the Quiberon region, and finding inspiration in Dauphine, Midi, Algeria and Savoy. Maxime Maufra is known for his landscapes and marine views, Maufra sometimes practice the pointillist technique of fellow artists Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley, incorporating strong and bold colors from the Pont-Aven School, and exploring other techniques such as etching and lithography. As an artist Maufra remained independent the enterity of his artistic career up until his death in May of 1923. CONDITION Observed in frame, the work appears in good condition. No apparent issues visible to the naked eye. Inspection under UV shows scattered retouching to around 5-10% of the surface, most notably a thin line in the sky emerging from the central left edge (about 1/3 the length of the surface), and an adjoining section of the bridge.
