THE SMITHS - SHOPLIFTERS OF THE WORLD UNITE 12" (ORIGINAL MISPRESSED 12" WHICH PLAYS 'YOU JUST HAVEN'T EARNED IT YET BABY' - RTT 195). Collectable 1987 UK 12" mispressing which has 'You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby' on the A-side instead of 'Shoplifters Of The World'. Undeniably a marketing gimmick (or a spiteful retort), a few hundred copies were pressed and released into record shops and became an instant collectable (somewhat assisted by a news report in the NME). The record is in glossy VG+ condition with a few light surface scuffs though no heavier feelable scratches. The original picture sleeve is in very clean Ex+ condition. A-side Matrix Etching - RTT 195 A1 ALF RAMSEY'S REVENGE. B-side Matrix Etching - RTT 195 B1.

Lot 13

THE SMITHS - HAND IN GLOVE - ORIGINAL 'NEGATIVE' SLEEVE DESIGN (RT 131). Well-presented copy of the record that most collectors regard as the No.1 Smiths rarity... Joe Slee, the Rough Trade Production Manager was interviewed by Q magazine in their October 1994 issue, "I binned all the reverse sleeves because they were faulty. I know they're worth money but, oh well, there goes my pension fund." As we all know, a handful were mischievously released into collector's hands. The sleeve is in VG+ condition showing a few light creases and paper scuffs though no rips, tears or splits. 'Withdrawn cover £40' is visible when held to light on the front top right section. The original record is in Ex+ condition showing only a couple of very faint and wispy paper marks. A-side Matrix Etching - RT 131 A-2U-1-2 (Kiss My Shades). B-side Matrix Etching - RT 131 B1 (KISS MY SHADES TOO / PORKY). Forget your Sex Pistols 'God Save The Queen' 7" on the A&M label, there are several hundreds of those in existence (albeit most probably gathering dust in collector's bank vaults), there are only approximately 25 of these in existence….a sound investment!

Lot 54

THE SMITHS - SHEILA TAKE A BOW 12" (ORIGINAL UK WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING - RTT 196). Original (EMI pressing) 1987 UK white label test pressing of Sheila Take A Bow. Also comes with a Rough Trade promotional press release. Side 1 Matrix Etching - ROUGH 61 A1. Side 2 Matrix Etching - ROUGH 61 B1

Lot 61

SANDIE SHAW - HAND IN GLOVE 7" (ORIGINAL UK WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING - SIGNED - RT 130). Lovely original 1984 UK 7" test pressing of the Sandie Shaw version of 'Hand In Glove' (with The Smiths as backing band), also comes with an APPEARING press release. The record is in Ex condition with a few light and minor surface marks. Signed by Sandie to the B side label. A-side Matrix Etching - RT 130 A-1U-1-1-1. B-side Matrix Etching - RT 130 B-1U-1-1-1. "I had the good fortune to interview Sandie on behalf of Record Collector magazine, and I got her to sign this test pressing when I went up to interview her. Scott Piering (for reasons only known to him) was trying to promote this as a double A-side....probably because the B-side was better!"

Lot 50

PANIC - 1986 12" WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING (RTT 193). Standard 1986 UK 12" white label test pressing of 'Panic'. The record is in VG condition with a few surface marks moreover noted to the B side. Lot 16

THE SMITHS - REEL AROUND THE FOUNTAIN - 1983 WITHDRAWN AND UNRELEASED 7" TEST PRESSING (ROUGH TRADE - RT 136). Staggeringly scarce original 1983 7" 'green' label test pressing of the cancelled and withdrawn second single 'Reel Around The Fountain'. It was decided by Rough Trade that the John Peel session of 'Reel Around The Fountain' would be used for the A-side of this withdrawn single with the Toy Tate-produced 'Jeane' on the B-side. The record is in superlative Ex+ condition showing only a couple of extremely fine, faint and wispy paper marks. A-side Matrix Etching - RT 136 A-1U-1-1-1. B-side Matrix Etching - RT 136 B-1U-1-1-1 (SLAP ME ON THE PATIO)This was the first serious Smiths collectable which entered collector's circles back in 1983 due to its withdrawn status. This listing also comes with the 1983 Issue 15 of Jamming magazine where Rough Trade promoted an early advert for the ill-fated release on page 3 of the magazine.

Lot 30

THE SMITHS - MEAT IS MURDER LP (ORIGINAL UK WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING - ROUGH 81). Beautifully kept scarce original 1985 UK white label test pressing of Meat Is Murder. Lot 40

THE SMITHS - HOW SOON IS NOW? 7" (1987 UK WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING FOR THE B-SIDE OF WILLIAM IT WAS REALLY NOTHING - RT 166). Extremely rare 1987 UK 7" single -sided test pressing of 'How Soon Is Now?'. To maximise earnings Rough Trade kept the Smiths catalogue releases in production up to the end of their career. In 1987 during a new production run, they pressed 'William It Was Really Nothing' with a new cover star (Billie Whitelaw) and changed the 7" B-side with 'How Soon Is Now?' instead of the original 'Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want' while keeping to the same catalogue number of RT166. This necessitated the need to create a new B-side pressing plate to produce this subsequent test pressing. Therefore this was only ever produced for internal approval, and would have only been pressed in single figures, you will be lucky to ever find another one! This pressing with very fetching light blue labels is 1-sided only with a test-tone only on the other side. The record is in great Ex+ condition showing only a couple of very light and fine paper marks. Appearing to be date stamped '10 OCT 1987'. A-side Matrix Etching - FB 7. B-side Matrix Etching - RT 166 B-2U-1-1-1 WE HATES BAD GRAMMER

THE SMITHS - GIRLFRIEND IN A COMA 12" (ORIGINAL UK WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING - RTT 197). Lovely example original 1987 UK 12" white label test pressing of Girlfriend In A Coma. The record is in Ex condition showing only a couple of very light and minor surface hairline marks. A-side Matrix Etching - RTT 197 A-1U-1-1-1 EVERYBODY IS A FLASHER AT HEART. Lot 44

THE SMITHS - SHAKESPEARE'S SISTER 7" (ORIGINAL UK WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING - RT 181). Unfathomably rare 1985 (EMI) UK 7" test pressing of 'Shakespeare's Sister'. By this time Rough Trade were promoting their single releases via 12" white label test pressings, so most 7" test pressings from this period onwards are rare as hen's teeth! The record is in Ex condition with a couple of light and minor surface/storage marks, these not at all heavier feelable scratches. A-side Matrix Etching - RT 181 A1 (HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS). B-side Matrix Etching - RT 181 B1

Lot 38

THE SMITHS - HEAVEN KNOWS I'M MISERABLE NOW 12" (ORIGINAL UK NON-EDITED VERSION WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING - RTT 156). Very rare 1984 UK 12" test pressing of the withdrawn 12 inch single which has the full un-edited version of 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now'. Making this release particularly scarce is that this was withdrawn with new 12 inch test pressings were created with the edited version, and also the 7" test pressing was mainly used for promotion. The record is in superb Ex+ condition showing only a couple of extremely faint, slight and wispy paper marks. A-side Matrix Etching - RTT 156 A1 (SMITHS PRESUMABLY). B-side Matrix Etching - RTT 156 B1 (FOREVER ILL)

Lot 23

THE SMITHS - YOU JUST HAVEN'T EARNED IT YET BABY - 1987 WITHDRAWN AND UNRELEASED 12" WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING (RTT 195). Remarkably rare original 1987 UK 12" test pressing of the withdrawn release of 'You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby'. Rough Trade and The Smiths had still not yet agreed on whether 'Shoplifters Of The World' or 'You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby' would be released as a single, so test pressings for both releases were made. 'Shoplifters' was released and this test pressing has gone into collecting history. The record is in clean Ex condition showing a couple of light and minor non-feelable small scuffs. This listing also comes with issue 42 of the of the Cartel in-house 'The Catalogue' trade magazine with a Rough Trade advert detailing the forthcoming release of this withdrawn single on page 12. A-side Matrix Etching - RTT 195 A-1U-1-1-3 (ALF RAMSEY'S REVENGE). B-side Matrix Etching - RTT 195 B-1U-1-1-1

Lot 34

THE SMITHS - STRANGEWAYS, HERE WE COME LP (ORIGINAL UK WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING - ROUGH 106). Great original 1987 UK white label test pressing of Strangeways, Here We Come. Lot 43

THE SMITHS - HOW SOON IS NOW C/W OSCILLATE WILDLY 7" (1985 UK WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING - RT 176). Infamous 'How Soon Is Now' 7" UK 1985 mispressing with 'Oscillate Wildly' on the B-side (the corrected release which eventually had 'Well I Wonder' on the reverse). Rather than bin or retain these mipressings, Scott Piering recycled them as promo's to radio stations and journalists while penning 'FAULTY' on the mispressed B-side. The record is in Ex condition with a few light and minor surface hairline marks, these never at all heavier feelable scratches. A-side Matrix Etching - RT-176-A / LYN-15492-1C-Z (THE TATTY TRUTH). B-side Matrix Etching - RT-176-B / LYN-15493-1C-Z

Lot 42

THE SMITHS - BARBARISM BEGINS AT HOME 12" (ORIGINAL UK WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING - RTT 171). Rather scarce original 1985 single-sided UK test pressing of 'Barbarism Begins At Home'. To promote the 'Meat Is Murder' album, Rough Trade pressed 'Barbarism Begins At Home' as a promotional 12 inch single. This pressing is single- sided only with 'Barbarism Begins At Home' on the A-side with a test-tone only on the other side. The record is in VG+ condition with a some light and minor surface marks/scuffs, these not heavier feelable scratches. A-side Matrix Etching - RTT-171-A / LYN-15482-1C.Z (THESE ARE THE GOOD TIMES). B-side Matrix Etching - LCP-2114-1A / LYN3507-4CR Only a handful of these test pressings were pressed, because there was no need to press any more due the finished manufactured 12" single becoming the vehicle for promotion of 'Meat Is Murder'.

Lot 49

THE SMITHS - BIGMOUTH STRIKES AGAIN 7" (ORIGINAL UK WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING - RT 192). Very rare 1986 UK 7" test pressing of 'Bigmouth Strikes Again'. Both 7" and 12" test pressings of this release are very hard to come by which suggests that Rough Trade did not use white label test pressings to promote this release. The record is in superb Ex+ condition showing only a couple of extremely minor, faint and wispy paper marks. A-side Matrix Etching - RT 192 A-1U-1-1-1 (BEWARE THE WRATH TO COME). B-side Matrix Etching - RT 192 B-1U-1-1-1 (TALENT BORROWS, GENIUS STEALS)

Lot 33

THE SMITHS - LOUDER THAN BOMBS LP (ORIGINAL UK DOUBLE WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING - ROUGH 255). Excruciatingly rare 1987 2 x UK test pressings of the 'Louder Than Bombs' double album. 'Louder Than Bombs' was a compilation album produced by Sire Records in the USA released to capitalise on the growing interest in the band in the United States. In order to avoid UK Smiths fans having to pay the high cost of imported copies of this Sire album, they pressed their own UK version. Both records are in superb Ex+ condition showing only a couple of extremely minor, faint and wispy paper marks. Side 1 Matrix Etching - ROUGH 255 A1. Side 2 Matrix Etching - ROUGH 255 B1. Side 3 Matrix Etching - ROUGH 255 C1. Side 4 Matrix Etching - ROUGH 255 D1 The UK album was not promoted at all, so no copies were sent out for promotional purposes, therefore this test pressing would have only been pressed in a handful of quantities, so don't expect to see another one come along anytime in the near future...

Lot 48

THE SMITHS - THE BOY WITH THE THORN IN HIS SIDE - 1985 12" WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING (RTT 191). Standard 1985 UK 12" white label test pressing of 'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side'. Sleeve has the well-known Beer Davies promo stick on the sleeve. Beer Davies were another plugging outfit that Rough Trade used to distribute and promote their promo releases. The record is in VG condition - with glossy playing surfaces, there are some light surface (non-feelable) marks noted. A-side Matrix Etching - RTT 191 A-1U-1-1-1 ARTY BLOODY FARTY. B-side Matrix Etching - RTT 191 B-1U-1-1-1 IS THAT CLEVER.

Lot 29

THE SMITHS - HATFUL OF HOLLOW LP (ORIGINAL UK WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING - ROUGH 76). Great to see original 1984 UK test Pressing of 'Hatful of Hollow' album with an 'APPEARING' press release glued to the front of the sleeve. APPEARING was the name of Scott Piering's plugging agency which he later set up to promote independent artists. The record is in superlative Ex+ or archive condition showing few marks. Side 1 Matrix Etching - ROUGH 76 A1 (THE IMPOTENCE OF ERNEST). Side 2 Matrix Etching - ROUGH 76 B1

B-side Matrix Etching - RTT 198 B-1U-1-1-1 YOU ARE BELIEVING, YOU DO NOT WANT TO SLEEP

Lot 26

THE SMITHS - THIS CHARMING MAN - 1983 7" PRESSING WITH MANCHESTER ADDRESS. 1983 UK 7" early pressing of 'This Charming Man'. This pressing has solid centre, no anti-slip serrations and comes in a sleeve that still hads the Glad Hips Manchester address on the back of the sleeve rather than Rough Trade's address. The record is in clean Ex condition, the sleeve superb sharp Ex+. A-side Matrix Etching - RT 136 A-3U-1-, B-side Matrix Etching - RT 136 B-1U-1- SLAP ME ON THE PATIO

Lot 59

THE SMITHS - WILLIAM IT WAS REALLY NOTHING 12"(WITHDRAWN 1984 ITALIAN 12" WITH DIFFERENT VERSION OF 'HOW SOON IS NOW?' - VINX 71). Rather scarce original 1984 withdrawn Italian 12" 'How Soon Is Now?'. One of the few non-UK items we have for sale here, the wrong version of 'How Soon Is Now?' was issued on the master tape that was sent to Virgin Italy. They were sent an unfinished different version of the track which was subsequently pressed and quickly withdrawn when the mistake was discovered. The A side is in VG+ condition showing some poly bag residue though this cannot be felt. The B side is in lovely clean Ex condition (no poly bag residue). A-side Matrix Etching - VINX 71 .1. B-side Matrix Etching - VINX 71 .2I. The sleeve is in very sharp Ex condition showing only very slight wear; with a pen mark to the reverse 'Milano 7-9-85'. If you haven't heard this different version before, it is a real eye-opener!

Lot 21

THE SMITHS - MEAT IS MURDER (LIVE) - 1985 WITHDRAWN AND UNRELEASED 7" TEST PRESSING (RT 186). Incredibly scarce original 1985 UK 7" test pressing of the unreleased 'Meat Is Murder Live E.P.'. The Smiths' concert at the Oxford Apollo in March 1985 was recorded for broadcast by the BBC, which led to the idea of releasing some of the live recordings as an EP later that year. However, the project never got beyond the test pressing stage, and when 'That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore' was issued in its place, all of the live tracks on this withdrawn 7" got recycled on the 12" B-side for 'That Joke...'. This withdrawn test pressing has the live 'Meat Is Murder' on the A-side and the live 'Nowhere Fast' and 'Stretch Out And Wait' on the B-side. The record is in fantastic Ex+ condition showing only a couple of extremely faint, slight and wispy paper marks. A-side Matrix Etching - RT 186 A-1U-1-1-1 OUR SOULS, OUR SOULS, OUR SOULS. B-side Matrix Etching - RT 186 B-1U-1-1-1

Lot 17

THE SMITHS - THIS CHARMING MAN - 1983 WITHDRAWN AND UNRELEASED 'LONDON VERSION' 7" TEST PRESSING (RT 136). 1983 UK single-sided 7" test pressing of the 'London Version' of 'This Charming Man'. You all know the story, The Smiths recorded the first studio version of TCM in London, a handful of test pressings were pressed and Geoff Travis, head of Rough Trade rejected it and told the band to re-record it which they duly did in Manchester (Stockport to be pedantic). This is a nice piece of 'never happened' history because the test pressings are the only place where you will find the London Version in 7" format. This is 1-sided only with a test-tone on the other side. The record is in VG+ condition showing a few light surface marks to the playing surface, these are never heavier feelable scratches. A-side Matrix Etching (machine stamped): RT 136 A-2U-1-1-1. B-side Matrix Etching - FB 7 x 1. Date stamped '26 SEP 1983' and handwritten catalogue number to the 'B' side label.

Lot 4

THE SMITHS - HAND IN GLOVE 7" (NO COMPANY ADDRESS - RT 131). Lesser known pressing of 'Hand In Glove' with no company address on the back of the sleeve, understood to have been pressed for export purposes. The sleeve is in Ex+ condition (a small print fault smudge next to the band's name, a lot these had this fault). The record is in Ex+ condition showing only a couple of very light and faint paper marks. A-side Matrix Etching - RT 131 A-2U-1-2 (Kiss My Shades). B-side Matrix Etching - RT 131 B1 (KISS MY SHADES TOO / PORKY)

Lot 20

THE SMITHS - STILL ILL 7" (ORIGINAL UK DEMO - R 61 DJ). Original 1984 UK 'Still Ill' demo promotional 7" single. Final production issue of the aforementioned listing. To promote the band's debut album Rough Trade pressed a demo promotional single with 'Still Ill' on the A-side and 'You've Got Everything Now' on the B-side. This was Smiths drummer Mike Joyce's personal copy. I was asked by Record Collector magazine to provide assistance twenty or so years ago when he was selling off some of his Smiths memorabilia, and I was able to buy a few bits. It is signed on both sides. The record is in Ex condition showing only a couple of very light and minor surface hairline marks. A-side Matrix Etching - RT 186 A-2U-1-1-1 OUR SOULS, OUR SOULS, OUR SOULS. B-side Matrix Etching - RT 186 B-2U-1-1-1 OUR SOULS, OUR SOULS, OUR SOULS. Date stamped '23 APR 1985'.

Lot 35

THE SMITHS - RANK LP (ORIGINAL UK WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING WITH MISPRESSED SLEEVE - ROUGH 126). Unbelievably rare original 1988 (CBS) UK test pressing with bizarre sleeve mispressing of the Album 'Rank' which lacks the cover star Alexandra Bastedo. Rather than thrown away, this was re-used to house this test pressing. The record is in fantastic archive condition showing very few marks indeed. The gatefold sleeve is in sharp Ex condition with a few light and minor creases. Side 1 Matrix Etching - ROUGH 126 A1 (PEEPHOLISM)/ Side 2 Matrix Etching - ROUGH 126 B1I. "I've seen more 'Hand In Glove' Negative Sleeves get sold over the decades than this mispressing!"

Lot 18

THE SMITHS - THIS CHARMING MAN 7" (ORIGINAL UK 'GREEN LABEL' TEST PRESSING - RT 136). Very rare 1983 UK single-sided 'green' label test pressing of TCM. Rough Trade Plugger Scott Piering re-used this to send out for promotional purposes to radio stations or music journalists. For this one, he photocopied a proof of the single's label and using a Pritt Stick, glued it to the A-side, the glue has since dried out (thankfully) and so the photocopied label is detached. Better still, this promo was sent out with the withdrawn 'Glad Hips Manchester Address' proof sleeve which has been cut, folded and assembled to mimic the single sleeve - such was Scott's inventiveness! This is 1-sided only with a test-tone on the other side. The record is in VG+ condition showing a few light and minor surface hairline marks, these not at all heavier feelable scratches. The sleeve is in Ex condition with only minor wear. A-side Matrix Etching - RT 136 A-3U-1-1-1 (timtom-cbs). B-side Matrix Etching - FB 7 x 1

THE SMITHS - STILL ILL 7"- ORIGINAL UK 1984 TEST PRESSING OF DEMO SINGLE (R DJ 61). Exceedingly rare original 1984 UK 7" 'green' label test pressing of the demo 'Still Ill' single. To promote the band's debut album Rough Trade pressed a demo promotional single (see next listing) with 'Still Ill' on the A-side and 'You've Got Everything Now' on the B-side. Scott Piering (Rough Trade Plugger) was so keen to send this out to DJ Gary Crowley at Capital Radio, that he sent him the test pressing before the demo single had gone into full manufacture. This is confirmed by the fact that he photocopied an early proof of the demo single's labels (slightly different to the final labels) and attached them to a standard single black sleeve. This was originally obtained from Gary Crowley's producer. Only a handful of these test pressings were pressed, there was no need to press any more due the finished demo single becoming the vehicle for promotion of their first album. The A side is in Ex condition with a few paper (not feelable) marks, the B side is presented in very clean Ex+ condition with few marks. A-side Matrix Etching - R DJ 61 A-1U-1-1-1. B-side Matrix Etching - R DJ 61 B-1U-1-1-1
