Sight sizes range from 10"H x 8.5"W to 4"H x 4.3"W.About the artist: HENRY ZIEGLER (1899 - 1968) Painter, illustrator, and etcher Henry Ziegler was born in Sherman, Texas. He studied at the Art Students League in New York, where he studied etching with Joseph Pennell and painting with William R. Leigh. He is best known for his western etchings, illustrations, and paintings. His commissions included a series of forty-nine etchings for the 1927 book Cowboy Stuff, published in a first edition of 12 copies and a trade edition of 500 copies in 1928. His etchings were exhibited at the art competition of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Ziegler?s western etchings and monoprints were included in The Cowboy in American Prints, published in 1985 by Ohio University Press. His work is held in the collections of The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Great Plains Art Museum, Smithsonian Institution, National Portrait Gallery, and Georgetown University. Mit dem Copyright-Blindstempel des Künstlers "Robert Motherwell / Editions". - Papier im Ober- und Unterrand technikbedingt gering gewellt, verso in den beiden oberen Ecken schmale Montierungsreste, insgesamt sehr gut. Prachtvoller, experimentell anmutender Druck mit leicht eingeprägter Plattenkante und breitem Rand, links mit dem Schöpfrand. Brooke Alexander, Inc., New York, gedruckt im Atelier des Künstlers, Greenwich. - Provenienz: Horizon Gallery, Massachussets, mit deren Gaslerieetikett auf der Rahemnrückpappe. - Imposant setzt Motherwell die schwarze rechteckige Form vor ein dichtes neutrales Farbfeld aus sattem Ocker und sandfarbenem Papier. Es weckt Erinnerungen an einen dicken Pinselstrich, selbstbewusst präsentiert vor dem Hintergrund. Motherwell nutzt Erdtöne häufig, um seine schwarzen Formen und Linien in der Wirkung zu verstärken. Text ist in seinen Graphiken vor allem der 1970er Jahre ein Mittel, auf das er immer wieder zurückgreift. In unserem Blatt wird der feinlinige, rote Text auf der schwarzen zentralen Fläche -wie "Oy/Yo" besagt - von Hand auf die Platte gezeichnet. Motherwell verschränkt Bild und Schrift zu einer untrennbaren Einheit miteinander, verschmelzt sie zu einem eindrucksvoll kalligraphischen Schriftbild. Soft ground etching, colour aquatint, etching and collage on light-brown, strong wove paper. Signed and numbered. With the artist's copyright blindstamp "Robert Motherwell / Editions". - Paper hardly buckled in upper and lower margin due to technique, small traces from previous mounting in both upper cornes on the verso, all in all very good. Splendid, experimental-like impression with lightly impressed plate mark and wide margin, deckle edge on the left. - One of 78 copies (+ 10 AP). - Published by Brooke Alexander, Inc. New York, printed at the artist's studio, Greenwich. - Imposingly Motherwell sets the black rectangular form against a dense neutral colour field of rich ochre and sand-coloured paper. It evokes memories of a thick brushstroke, confidently presented against the background. Motherwell often uses earth tones to enhance the effect of his black shapes and lines. Text is a device he returns to again and again in his prints, especially in the 1970s. In our print the fine-lined red text on the black central area - as "Oy/Yo" states - is drawn by hand on the plate. Motherwell intertwines image and script into an inseparable unity, fusing them into an impressively calligraphic typeface.

Verso punktuell auf Unterlage befestigt. Unter Glas gerahmt (geöffnet). - In den beiden rechten Ecken je ganz leichte Knickspur, im Ober- und Unterrand sehr wenige leichte Griffspuren, verso kleine Bleistiftannotation, insgesamt sehr gut, die Aquarellierung farbfrisch. Ausgezeichneter Druck mit feinliniger Plattenkante, zartem Plattenton und breitem, vollem Rand. Eines von lediglich 16 Exemplaren. Etching, water-coloured, on wove paper. Signed, dated and numbered. Spot-mounted to underlying mat on the verso. Framed under glass (opened). - Light crease mark in both right corners, very few light grip marks in upper and lower margin, small pencil annotation on the verso, all in all very goodd, watercolour very fresh. Superb impression with fine lined platemark, delicate plate tone and wide, full margin. - One of only 16 copies.

Like her canvases, she knows how to use paper in equally colourful and expressive ways. Our work, printed in four colours from four plates, is an expressive example of her experimental formal language and a testimony to her closeness to nature. The earthy tones of the horizontally arranged composition flow into each other, create a harmoniously nuanced whole. "Earth Slice" refers to the earth itself, is a subtle reference to origin.
