After William Hogarth (1697 - 1764), Re-strike etching made from Hogarth's original plate for a private collector, of four classical 'heads of men', after the painting by Raphael [see reverse for further details], Below the etching is the original wording from the plate indicating publication in May 1781 by Mrs Hogarth at the Golden head Leicester Fields, Image size 9" x 14 ½" [As indicated on the reverse of the frame this re-strike was made for Mr N Gelber's collection of paintings and derives from the Raphael cartoons held at Hampton Court based on biblical studies that Hogarth's father-in-law Sir James Thornhill (1675 - 1734) was using to compile a book for teaching purposes - hence there is an inscription on the lower part of the front below the etching that reads " Mr Walpole in his Anecdotes of Painting &c Vol 1V p22 speaking of the Cartoons at Hampton Court observes that Sir James Thornhill "having made copious studies of the heads, hands and feet intended to publish an exact account of the whole for the use of students: but this work has never appeared" As the present plate was found among others belonging to the late Mr Hogarth it is not impossible that it might have been engraved by Hogarth for his father-in-law's intended publication.] CONDITION: Please Note - we do not make reference to the condition of lots within catalogue descriptions. We are however happy to provide additional information regarding the condition of items on request.
