Amadis Aldano Maldo, known as Maldonado (Italian, fl. 1759-1800s) Trompe l'oeil, circa 1798-1811 signed lower left "Le Major d'Aldana Maldonado d' et f:t" watercolour, pen and ink on paper, in a maple frame 38.50 x 59cm (15 x 23in) Other Notes: Amadis Maldonado was a painter and etcher active in Florence in the second half of the eighteenth century. He was Captain of the Corps of Engineers in the service of the Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Lorraine and in 1777, he was promoted to the office of Major. The painted engraving of Admiral Nelson right of the centre is taken from an etching known to have been executed in 1798 by Carlo Lasinio (Italian,1759–1838) from a painting by Daniel Orme (British, 1766–1832). This, therefore, places the present work after this date. The dedication, "M.sa M.ra Settimmia Strozzi / Vedova Ferroni / Montughi" on the painted etching on the right, is to the Marquise Maria Settimia Strozzi (1745-1811). This provides a 'terminus ante quem' for the work as 1811, since the Marquise Strozzi continued to live in the Villa di Montughi after her husband's death until circa 1811. Some scattered foxing. Chipping to the paper close to lower left corner.
