Ian Strang, RE (British, 1886-1952), Allotments, War Time, signed lower right "Ian Strang 1942", pencil, 28 x 39cm (10.92 x 15.21in). Ian Strang was an etcher, draughtsman, illustrator and painter of architecture, landscape and figures in oils and watercolour. He was the son of William Strang, and studied at the Slade under Brown and Tonks between 1902 and 1906, and then at the Academie Julian under J P Laurens. He travelled extensively in Europe and held his first solo exhibition at the Goupil Gallery in 1914. Shows followed at the Chenil, Leicester and Lefevre Galleries. He exhibited at the New English Art Club, the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and at the Royal Academy between 1923 and 1951. Ian Strang`s work is represented in collections including the Tate Gallery. Strang was a Rome Scholar at the Faculty of Engraving at the British School in Rome, and published `The Student`s Book of Etching` (1938). His etched work used dry-point to produce tonal, pictorial effects whilst his later prints used a pure etching technique.
