Provenance: The estate of Aaron Sopher, Baltimore artist and associate of Max Beckmann and George Grosz. Max Beckmann (German, 1884-1950) was a painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, and writer. Although he is classified as an Expressionist artist, he rejected both the term and the movement. Beckmann achieved great success during the years of the Weimar Republic but his fortunes changed with the rise to power of the Third Reich. His work was considered degenerate by Adolph Hitler and Beckmann was dismissed from his teaching position at the Art School in Frankfurt. He left Germany for the Netherlands and later the United States. A bit toned overall, matte-burn; very good.

Matted and framed, overall 60x48.5 cm (23¾x19"). Signed and title in pencil in the lower margin. Four skiers speeding down the slopes. John Stoll (German-American 1889-1974) studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Dresden and settled in San Francisco in 1915. Perhaps best known for his maritime scenes and for his murals at the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island and for the Sailors Union in the Pacific Building, San Francisco. Fine.
