§ Phyllis Ginger (British, 1907-2005) Street scene signed lower right within the print "Phyllis Ginger" colour lithograph 42 x 68cm (16 x 27in) Other Notes: Phyllis Ginger belonged to a generation of women artists whose work is relatively unknown, even though their contribution to English painting was substantial. Born in New Malden, Surrey, she trained at Richmond School of Art under Stanley Roy Badmin. She aspired to become an illustrator but she was more captivated by the medium of etching and portraiture as a subject. She first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1938. Ginger's skill as a topographical artist led to her involvement in the "Recording Britain" scheme, started in 1939. The V&A Prints and Drawings department holds 19 watercolours belonging to this scheme, her most important commission, completed for the Pilgrim Trust between 1940 and 1942. Condition appears fine.
