Charles James Spence, Rory Spence, Sadie Spence and others Various sizes A family archive of watercolours, pencil and ink drawings, etchings and other prints by the Spence family of North Shields, including: two albums of theatrical portraits and sketches by Sadie Spence, dated October, 1900 and April, 1894; three bound albums of etchings by C.J. Spence, 1872, 1871 and 1884/86; an original watercolour landscape in the manner of Thomas Miles Richardson, attributed to C.J. Spence; an etching "Duck Reach Power Station", signed proof by Rory Spence, 1987; an album of original drawings and watercolours by C.J. Spence; a scrap album of Victorian engravings; sundry watercolour landscapes; prints; and photographs. (qty) NB: Charles James Spence was born at North Shields, the son of a banker Robert Spence, and later became a partner in his father's firm. Much of his time was taken up with public responsibilities associated with his birth place, including the post of Borough Treasurer of Tynemouth. Spence was keenly interested in antiquarian matters, and in addition to his public commitments served as one of the curators of the Society of Antiquaries, Newcastle. He was also Chairman of the School of Art, Armstrong College (now Newcastle University), and established a considerable reputation locally for his watercolour paintings and etchings. He was a regular exhibitor of the Arts Association and later the Bewick Club. His sons Robert and Philip, together with other members of the family, were also gifted artists. See illustration
