Daniel Jacobus de Jager(South African 1936 - 2003)HORSE HEADsigned and dated 2013bronze with cast composite baseheight: 36cm including base Danie de Jager, born in 1936, grew up in the Bushveld just outside of Johannesburg, where his fascination with the animals that inhabit South Africa’s landscapes began to develop. It is this fascination for which de Jager is best known today. The artist has created some of the most impressive examples of large-scale animal sculpture in recent South African history, capturing the dynamic forms and essence of these creatures. De Jager created many key public commissioned pieces during the turbulent Apartheid period. Subsequently, many of de Jager’s sculptures have been at the forefront of efforts to re-contextualise and reimagine works which have complex political histories. Horse Head, (lot347), is a possible maquette for a piece that has undergone exactly this type of reinterpretation. This work may be a study for the well-known Equine Sculpture by de Jager, which currently stands atop a grand circular plinth on the University of Pretoria’s sports campus. The work, originally titled Freedom Symbol, shows four horses in full gallop, created to represent the newfound freedom of the Republic of South Africa from Imperial rule. Each horse depicted the four provinces at the time and symbolised the Nationalist ideals of freedom moving forward. The sculpture was originally set in Pretoria’s city-centre as a part of the monumental display in Strijdom Square. After the collapse of the main structure surrounding Strijdom Square in 2001, it was rebuilt and renamed after the struggle heroine, Lilian Nyoni. The Freedom Symbol sculpture was deemed inappropriate as it served as a reminder of the oppression, and was donated and relocated to the University of Pretoria in 2007. The work was stripped of its original title and its meaning was suddenly rewritten. The piece was placed within close proximity to the large lake on campus and the sculpture became a masterfully-executed example of the beauty of untamed nature. Placed within a new context, now symbolising hope and freedom for students moving into their futures after university, the sculpture’s complex past is largely unknown to the students who now use the work as a backdrop to their annual graduation photographs. -A.C Source: Ogilvie, G. 1988.
