Daniel Quare, London. A Queen Anne month going marquetry longcase clock, with five ringed pillars and striking on a bell, with a 12 inch square brass dial and silvered chapter ring inscribed 'Dan Quare London', the matt centre with subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture having blued steel hands, with cast crown and cherub pierced spandrels, the walnut veneered case with floral marquetry panels with an ebonised ground, the hood with a tiered caddy top and blind fret friezes with corner pilasters, the rectangular trunk door with a replaced glass lenticle, the sides banded and inlaid stringing, the base panel to a moulded edge plinth, 93.5in (237cm) h; pendulum, two weights. Daniel Quare was born in Somerset in 1647 and became a Free Brother in the Clockmakers' Company in 1671 and a Master in 1708. He was a strict Quaker and refused to accept the prestigious position of clockmaker to King George I on account of not wishing to take the oath of allegiance. He was, however, received at the palace and allowed to enter by the back stairs. He died at Croydon in 1724.
