A Staffordshire figure of Arthur Orton, titled 'Sir R Tichborne', circa 1874, modelled standing with a bird in his left hand and a shot-gun in his right hand, mainly unpainted with a pink waistcoat and black hat, on a titled plinth base, 36.5cm high. Note: Arthur Orton (1834-1898), was a claimant to the Tichborne estates, impersonating the heir Roger Tichborne upon his return from Australia 1866, who was declared lost at sea in 1854. Orton was sentenced to fourteen years imprisonment for perjury in 1874, and even after his release, despite a confession which he soon retracted, he continued his claim; he died in 1898, with his coffin plate even bearing the Tichborne name.
