A French Second Empire Sienna marble mantel clock, 11.5cm enamel dial inscribed with Roman numerals, Breguet hands, 14-day movement striking on a bell, the backplate signed C de Touche, 228 R(ue) St. Martin 230, No. 25923, arched case, ropetwist and lotus bezel, tall moulded plinth base, 42cm high, c. 1860The maker, Chev. Constantin-Louis Detouche (1810-1889) was one of the most important mid-19th century clockmakers in France. He took over his father's business, founded in 1803, in the mid-1830s and made many horological improvements, and between 1845-and 1859 was joined as chef d'atelier by the renowned mechanician Jacques-Francois Houdin. In the 1860s he was appointed clockmaker to Emperor Napoleon III. During theThird Republic, his firm also retailed clocks, especially those by Japy Freres.For his efforts he was made a Knight of the Danish Order iof the Dannebrog and a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur.
A 19th century oak cased longcase clock, the hood with turned pilasters, the dial with pierced brass mask decorated spandrels, silvered chapter ring, subsidiary date and seconds dial and makers name William Newman Norwich. The case with reeded angled pilasters above a plinth base and ogee bracket feet. 78ins. Est £200-300
A Victorian satin birch clothes press by W. Bertrum of London, the top with a moulded cornice above two panelled doors, enclosing mahogany sliding trays, the base with two short and three panelled doors, with turned wood handles, on a plinth, stamped to top drawer W. Bertrum, 100 Dean Street, Soho W, 224cm high, 125cm wide. Provenance: Thoresby Hall, Nottinghamshire.
