A Swiss Black Forest carved eagle, late 19th century, in the manner of Alfred Stahli of Brienz, Switzerland, standing on a stylised rocky base with a canted plinth, inscribed to underside CEH & Wg in blue This eagle is similar to eagles exhibited by Stahli at the Philadelphia Great Exhibition of 1876. Provenance: Charles Ethelbert Hillman (d. 1939) who was mayor of Tunbridge Wells in 1938-39. Every Summer he and his family holidayed in Switzerland and brought back various Black Forest carvings as souvenirs.
