A HISTORICAL AND SIGNIFICANT FAMILY ARCHIVE OF MEDALS AND MATERIAL RELATING TO TWO FAMILY MEMBERS OF ONE FAMILY SPANNING TWO WORLD WARS, firstly a glazed frame containing a parchment style coloured scroll relating to the WWII Service of a Pte Frank Hughes, who was from the Ocker Hill/Toll end area and served with the 1st Btn Suffolk Regiment from September 8th 1914, till his demobilisation in March 1919, the scroll retains much of its colour and is fitting tribute to a soldier who served in Belgium, France, Egypt, Salonika and Italy, second are the group of medals awarded to SSX. 24615, Dennis Frank Hughes, Royal Navy, who served with Distinction during WWII and went on to enjoy a decorated Service in Staffordshire/West Midlands Police after the War rising to become a Detective, his story is made more significant in his humane actions which save the life of a U-Boat Sailor in the Med, medal group consists of 1939-45, Atlantic, Africa & Italy Stars M.I.D. Emblem on Africa Star, Defence and War medal, together with his Police Long Service/Good Conduct medal, together with the Malta Commemorative medal and medallion for Crete and wearing medal, boxed, also an original framed M.I.D. Certificate dated 1945, a vast amount of paperwork, both in English and German relate to the sinking of U-Boat (U-453) on 21st May 1944, in the Ionian Sea near to Cape Spartivento, when it was sunk by Depth charges from HMS Termagant & Tanacious, Hughes was serving aboard HMS Termagant, he bravely pulled aboard, a German sailor by the name of Hans Baumers, he was taken POW with other U-Boat crew but after hostilities ended Hughes and Baumers became life long friends, making trips backwards and forwards to Germany for re-unions, also with this lot is a metal plaque mounted on a wooden plinth displaying a U-Boat badge and inscription relating to a re-union in 1987 at Traben-Trarbach, also present are a large number of colour and black and white photographs relating to both sailors, at re-unions family get togethers, etc and more formal photographs in albums etc, Hughes who was a capable footballer also has trials with Wolverhampton Wanderers and played at a high level throughout, his Police Service amounted to some 27 years, there are hours and hours of reading here making this lot an interesting and special capsule of both sides of conflict during WWI, also with the lot is a case containing all the paperwork with silk hankies badge for the Crete Veterans ASC, etc
