Rubbing, loss and wear to ebonised finish throughout, with some evidence of repainting and touching up in places. Marks, wear, rubbing, scuffs and grazes to leather commensurate with age and use, with some lifting to one edge. Splits to pedestals and doors. Joints fairly tight and solid. Drawers and doors run and open smoothly. Marks and stains to drawer interiors. Overall appears in well-used condition, with consequent wear and cosmetic damage. Structurally sound and stable. Pefectly usable in its current state.

As such, his work is defined a typically neoclassical depiction of contemporary figures. 'The Highland Mary' portrays Mary Morison - a famous nineteenth-century figure known for holding the affection of Scottish poet, Robert Burns. The sculpture illustrates Burns and Morison's final encounter, in which Burns swears eternal faithfulness, as evoked in his namesake poem:That heart that lo'ed me dearly!But still within my bosom's coreShall live my Highland MaryThe sculpture was first commissioned in 1852 for notable businessman and potter, Charles Meigh, at his new residence of Grove House, in Shelton, Staffordshire. Spence went on to make several versions of 'The Highland Mary', including an example commissioned for Prince Albert as a birthday present to Queen Victoria, which now resides in the Guard Chamber at Buckingham Palace. A George III brass mounted mahogany eight day longcase clock, the 12 inch arched brass dial with strike / silent, subsidiary seconds and date dials, five pillar movement with anchor escapement, the case with unusual brass columns flanking the hood and further brass pilasters running down flanking the trunk door, 49cm wide, 211cm high***CONDITION REPORT***Overall of a good rich reddish brown mahogany tone, a number of separations of the moulding across the top of the hood with old damage and crude repair to the top left corner of the door, door lock looks original but no key present, brass columns and pilasters rubbed but look original as do the ball finials, dial with old scuffing and scratching, hands oxidised, movement looks complete but neglected in recent years, seat board is slightly raised up with two thin strips of timber below it suggesting perhaps a marriage of movement to case, trunk door a little more faded than elsewhere on the case, has original lock with working key, minor dents, scuffs and flaws throughout the case, comes with two brass cased weights and a brass faced pendulum, extreme base of the case probably cut down and showing with more reddish tone along with a later plinth foot.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place. A massive Continental majolica green glazed campana vase and associated stand, late 19th century, the vase moulded in relief with bacchanalian scenes, applied with a pair of bifurcated handles, the associated fluted stand on three palmette shaped feet, total height 153cm, small repairs***CONDITION REPORT***One of the handles has a broken and reglued section on one side, other occasional small glaze flakes to the vase. The vase does not fit the associated stand so a green painted wooden plinth has been made to support the vase on the hollow stand.
