Oxford University Chess Club was founded in 1869 and is the oldest University Chess Club in the United Kingdom. An early 19th Century mahogany cased domestic "Regulator" by James McCabe, Royal Exchange, London, the 12ins diameter painted metal dial with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds dial to the eight day movement with deadbeat escapement, heavy brass plates with plain turned pillars, wooden pendulum and rod with heavy brass bob with brass regulating nut to base, single cased brass weight, contained in figured mahogany case in the "Egyptian" manner with stepped pyramid to the cresting and the whole inlaid with ebony stringings and ebonised mouldings, arched trunk door and conforming smaller square door to plinth, on double moulded plinth base, 93ins high (bowed glass to the dial broken and now missing, split to lower door). Note : James McCabe recorded working London (Cheapside and Royal Exchange), entered 1773, Member of the Clockmakers Company 1781 and died 1811
