They later married and she changed her name to Maharani Prem Kaur Sahiba.Demétre Chiparus (1886-1947), was born in Drohoi, Romania, went to study in Italy with the sculptor Raffaello Romanelli, and then enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The distinctive sculptures he produced, in the Art Deco style, were frequently made with bronze and ivory - a tradition that had been used in ancient Greece and commonly known as chryselephantine.Chiparus, fascinated by the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and influenced by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, was also inspired by the exotic - something that is very evident in this fantastic sculpture.Condition report: Stamped marks under foot, signed to the top of the marble behind the figure. Possibly re-silvered to the hat. Slightly loose on the base, can be tightened via nut underneath the base. In a private collection for 40 years, bought in the 1970s. See further images.
