A probably 19th century Dutch silver apostle spoon, having upper twisted stem to an apostle standing upon a plinth terminal, the lower stem engraved with bird and mask heads and scratch decoration line verso, bearing dolphin mark to edge of the plain oval bowl and marked AO to base of stem, length 17.5cm, 1.25ozt
Great Western Railway top lever locomotive whistle numbered 3555 on the operating lever and stamped GWR on the bottom mounting nut. New research and photographic evidence has come to light thanks to Mark Jepson and Cannon Brian Arman. The Great Western had some locos fitted with these top lever whistles in a short period between 1929-30 as an experiment to try a keep the steam exiting higher up as the standard whistle steam was sometimes obscuring the drivers view, these were quickly superseded by the standard whistles being housed in a steel whistle shield. Photographs exist of 7200, 7201, 4901, 2251 and 6743 with these style of whistles. Stands 15in tall including wooden plinth and has a bell diameter of 3.5in. A super and historic item not seen before although a smaller size one is known to survive.
A William IV Silver Cup and Cover, by Edward, Edward, John and William Barnard, London, 1833, Retailed by Braithwaite and Jones, London campana-shaped and on foliage chased lobed foot, the rim and detachable cover with similar foliage, the body with a band of chased trailing foliage, flowers and fruiting grapevines, with two branch-cast handles, each side with a vacant cartouche, one surrounded by three horses and riding tack the other with foliage and rocaille, the interior gilded, the cover with an associated French finial cast as a cauliflower and leaves, on a later ebonised plinth with an applied plaque engraved with an inscription33cm wide over handles, 37.5m high excluding plinth, weight of silver 129oz 9dwt, 4,026grThe inscription on the plinth reads 'The Thirsk Hunt Cup 1956 won by L. B. Holliday's "Sonorous" 4 Years Carrying 93'.Fully marked on body near handle. Further part marked inside cover. The finial marked with French post 1838 standard mark. There is some wear to the marks, though each is generally clear. The foot engraved 'Braitwaite & Jones Fec't London'. There is some wear to the engraved signature. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The two cartouches have each been erased. There is the remains of gilding to the exterior though this is almost entirely gone. The gilding inside is pale. Part of one leg on one horse is lacking. There is a small patch on the cover, perhaps where a notch had been cut to accommodate a ladle. The later plinth with some scratching and wear. The later finial with a crack to one leaf.
A George V Silver-Gilt Porringer and Cover, by Skinner and Co., London, 1912 in the Charles II style, tapering cylindrical and on spreading foot, chased with Chinoiserie-style foliage scrolls and fruiting grapevines, the detachable cover with openwork foliage finial, with two female bust cast handles, on later ebonised plinth, applied with a plaque engraved with an inscriptionthe cup 19.5cm wide over handles, 20cm high including plinth, weight of silver 18oz 2dwt, 563grThe inscription on the plaque reads 'Presented to Major L. B. Holliday, M.F.H., by the Derwent Hunt 1922'.Fully marked near rim and on cover bezel. The marks are generally clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is most noticeable as a loss to the gilding as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. There is loss to the ebonising on the plinth and scuffing and marks to the plinth overall. The finial has perhaps been reattached.

A Good Month Going Chiming Centre Seconds Longcase Clock, signed Samuel Norton, Yarmouth, circa 1770, caddied pediment with brass ball finials, well figured trunk door, framed quatre form moulded plinth, 14-inch arched brass dial with a silvered chapter ring, finely engraved centre with a basket of flowers and scroll decoration, date aperture, arch with strike/silent selection, large eight pillar triple weight driven movement, quarter chiming with five hammers striking a nest of five bells and a larger bell for the hours 274cm highRe-built caddy, pierced frets are later, well figured case with good colour, front of the case with some cracks and the surfaces are slightly lifting in parts, later door locks, later piece of wood has been added around the trunk door escutcheon, scuff marks to the sides, front of the plinth with some later mouldings and the surface has ripple marks, silvered chapter rings are faded, movement looks clean, signs of a later escape wheel and pallets, with three weights and a pendulum.

After the Antique: A Carved White Marble Figure of The Dying Gaul, the recumbent figure on oval base 65cm long First recorded in the Ludovisi Collection in 1623, the antique marble known as 'The Dying Gaul' was acquired for the Capitoline Museums by Pope Clement XII. Initially thought to be a Roman Gladiator it is now known to be a Roman copy of a Hellenistic bronze, probably by Epigonus, court sculptor to Attalus, depicting a wounded Galatian, whose army invaded the kingdom of Pergamon in the third century BC.Since the marble's discovery, it has become one of the most widely reproduced Classical figures with examples in bronze, marble and alabaster. 65cm by 32cm by 39cm Broken an honestly repaired. Head reatached, plinth broken in two next to the sword. right arm broken through bicep and wrist. Left leg broken through thigh and ankle. Numerous other cracks and chips.

Firing cracks to the square vase. Some flaking to the black enamel. When assembled both figures nod, the heads sit a little high, the wire may have been replaced and not trimmed, neck mounts a little bent and may also benefit from slight adjustment. Porcelain of the head and body seem to match but originality cannot be guaranteed absolutely.The original receipt is available to the purchaser of this lot.

A Regency Mahogany, Ebony and Boxwood-Strung Four-Door Library Bookcase, early 19th century, the upper section with moulded cornice above open and adjustable shelves, all between moulded stiles, the base of breakfront form with reeded edge above moulded cupboard doors enclosing pine shelves, on a moulded plinth base308cm by 60cm by 245cmHeavily scuffed throughout, particularly to the shelves. The cupboard doors are slightly misaligned. There are some scuffs and faults around the moulded base and some small veneer losses. There are some further heavy scuffs to the shelves as well as some splitting to the moulding on the front of the shelves beneath the cornice. The right-hand central cupboard door has a small split. Some variations in colour.
An unusual and heavy bronze figure of a five-toed Dragon breathing fire and gazing up at a flaming pearl held aloft in its rear claw, raised on a plinth/pedestal resembling rolling waves and with Greek key details, the Dragon being flanked to either side by an arm with breaking wave detail and each supporting a sphere surrounded by writhing serpents. The pedestal features a four character detail to the front and the base has an impressed four-character mark beneath. On a label attached is written "Chinese Bronze Dragon figure Qing period with foundry mark under base". 12'' wide x 11 3/4'' high overall. 2.265 Kg approx.
