A late 19th century carved oak blanket box, the hinged lid above intricately carved panelled front to a plinth base, with carved end panels. This chest was made by William Henry Perkin(s) of Buxton, Derbyshire, where he worked as marble inlayer. He married Laura Blanche Stevenson in 1879 and it is believed the chest was made around that time. In 1896 William re-enlisted with the Sherwood Foresters and sadly in June 1900 Sergeant Perkin was killed at Rhenoster, South Africa, during the Boer War. He was with the signalling section. Included in the lot are two receipts indicating that his widow sold the chest in 1900 but in 1913 it was bought back by Leonard Creswell, her son-in-law, since when it has remained in the family. Also included in the lot is a copy of a photograph of Perkin, and a photograph of Laura Blanche Stevenson and Leonard Creswell. William Henry Perkin is remembered on the Boer War Memorial in Buxton Town Hall. (see also Lot 1964)
A Victorian walnut miniature chest on associated plinth, the two hinged doors enclosing four drawers with brass inset handles with adjustable sectioned interior, height including plinth 43cm, width 35cm, and a small Edwardian hanging wall cupboard with shelf space and two drawers enclosed by the hinged doors, height 31cm, width 48cm (2).
A George III oak longcase clock with 11" brass dial, with silvered chapter ring set with Roman numerals and date aperture, the eight day movement inscribed "James Berry Pontefract", flanked with two fluted columns, with long rectangular door and plinth base, height 205cm. The maker is listed as operating c.1770.
