A LARGE PORTABLE SHRINE (ZUSHI) CONTAINING A GILT AND POLYCHROME WOOD FIGURE OF JIZO BOSATSUJapan, 16th-17th century, late Muromachi (1333-1573) to early Edo period (1615-1868)The exterior of the shrine of roiro with hinged doors and gilt-metal fittings chased and incised with floral and foliate designs, containing a finely carved sculpture of Jizo Bosatsu standing on a double lotus dais raised on square plinth surrounded by rockwork supported on a tiered square base. The bodhisattva is dressed in a long flowing robe applied with gilt and colored pigments as well as an ornamental necklace suspending small beads. He is holding the hoju (treasure jewel) in his left hand and the shakujo (staff) suspending loose rings in his right. His serene face with glass-inlaid eyes and byakugo (urna). The lotus dais is inset with a flattened post surmounted by a circular halo.HEIGHT 33.5 cm (the figure) and 70 cm (the shrine)Condition: Good condition with some wear, minor age cracks, old repairs to hands and feet, flaking and small losses to lacquer, some with associated minor touchups.Provenance: From a Hungarian private collection.Jizo Bosatsu (Ksitigarbha) has been worshipped since the Heian period, particularly as the protector of children. This bodhisattva is a merciful figure who alone among Buddhist deities moves through the six worlds of illusion in his role of saving all sentient beings. A FRENCH CAST IRON FIGURAL FOUNTAIN CAST BY ANTOINE DURENNE CIRCA 1870 Modelled as Bacchic child holding a clam shell basin, right foot on a shell, the square base with cast signature 'A.DURENNE PARIS", now set on composition stone plinth figure 24.5cm high- its base 36 by 37cm, 132.5cm high overall For a very similar figure please see Christie's "DUNSBOROUGH PARK: GARDEN STATUARY FROM THE COLLECTION OF BARON AND BARONESS SWEERTS DE LANDAS WYBORGH", 20th June 2013, lot 272, sold £10,000 Condition Report: Weathered and with wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Varying scrapes to painted surface throughout- notably to extremities- the fountain interior blocked with stones and leaves. Most notable condition issue is at figure's right foot on the shell- there is a crack running from behind it, through it and the shell below and down into the front corner. There are signs of some previous remedial infill here- will require careful transport so as to not exacerbate the area/fault. Signs of rust and surface lifting - notably around head and neck, interior of top, and margins where surface has been scuffed or abraded. An early 20th century mahogany partners' desk of small proportions, with gilt tooled oxblood leather inset panel to the top and an arrangement of drawers to each side, to plinth base, 76 x 123 x 121cm.Condition Report: - Overall solid but used condition, showing light signs of wear throughout. There is a small area of polish missing from the leather inset panel. There is one key for each side, but it does not appear to operate the majority of the locks.
