A Thomas Vennall is recorded in Loomes, Brian 'Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Vol 2' as working from Deal 1826-9. This clock may well be an earlier example by this maker or by a relative.

Thomas Wentworth (II) is recorded in Snell, Michael 'Clocks & Clockmakers of Salisbury' as working up to 1740, he was Mayor of Salisbury in 1719. A movement and dial by his father is also included in the sale, Lot 578.

The scene to the arch is probably taken from an engraving by Bertolozzi after Thomas Barker of Bath entitled 'The Old Woodman', the model was called George Kelston who was well known in the Bath area in the 1790s. See 'The Barkers of Bath', an exhibition catalogue, Victoria Art Gallery, Bath, 17 May - 28 June 1986 p.27.
