A Late 19th/20th Century Dark Hardwood Ancestor Figure, possibly Lake Sentani, Northern Coast of New Guinea, with figural headdress, rounded head with circular carved eyes, small rounded nose and wide mouth, his chin resting on his hands, with concentric carved navel button, squatting on a compressed cylindrical plinth carved with bands of scrolls, 17cm **Provenance:- collected in the mid 1920's by a Manchester civic dignitary whilst travelling in Papua New GuineaLovely rich patina. There is a fine crack running up his back from the plinth for 8cm
Two Early 20th Century Sepik River Spirit/Ancestor Figures, Papua New Guinea, each of light hardwood, standing wearing a high headdress, with hooked beak shape nose, on cylindrical plinth, the smaller figure bearing traces of red pigment, 35.5cm and 21cm **Provenance:- collected in the mid 1920's by a Manchester civic dignitary whilst travelling in Papua New GuineaTaller figure - the headdress is split and has a knock to one of its extremities, otherwise in good condition. Smaller figure - has a small chip to one of the extremities of the headdress, otherwise in good condition.
