A late Edwardian mahogany Longcase clock of small sizeIn the George III style, with a swan-neck pediment above twin-fluted columns and glazed dial door, the trunk with pendant acorns between palmettes, the arched glazed door between quarter-fluted columns, on quoin corners, on plinth base with similar quoin corners, on ogee bracket feet, the 8in arched brass dial with moon phase in the arch, above silvered chapter ring, with foliate engraved dial plate, the substantial twin train movement with deadbeat escapement and maintaining power, striking the hours on a bell, with wood rod glazed mercurial pendulum, (2 weights, 1 mercury pendulum)184cm high Condition Report This charming clock is in very good overall condition and was running prior to consignment. It is a high quality case and movement. The dial plate and moon disc are thick gauge. The dial plate has three formerly drilled winding holes plugged with brass and engraved over at the front and two dial feet fixings now filled. The seatboard screws line up and there is no evidence of another position. One can only surmise that the manufacturer was re using a dial plate originally planned for a bigger dial as the filled winding holes are for a bigger movement.
A walnut longcase clock The movement with later engraved nameThe case with a moulded pediment above blind fret, glazed door flanked by a spiral-turned column to each side above the trunk inset with a panel door and a brass-outlined roundel, on a stepped base and plinth; the 12in square brass dial with engraved hatching to the edge, crowned cherub spandrels, silvered chapter ring with engraved minutes 1-60, pierced blued steel hands, enclosing a matted centre with seconds subsidiary and calendar aperture, the twin train four-pillar movement, with thin plates, engraved NDW to the lower part of the backplate, rack strike on a bell and anchor escapement, the fly engraved H. Kempton, case and movement associated, the case restored and reconstructed, incorporating earlier elements, (1 pendulum and 2 weights)217cm high Condition Report The case is in good condition. It has been repolished fairly recently. The carcass is a softwood, not oak. The top section of each cheek is replaced so the joint is hidden within the trunk. They have lined it up to the original score line. The movement is inscribed Gould but NOT BY HIM AND IS NOT of Gould's quality. Interestingly the back of the dial plate is punched to force the metal forward and I surmise the original maker's signature was ground out hence the need to bring the metal 'forward' with the punching. The chapter ring has Gould's rare and unusual style of minute numbering but the hand of the engraver does not have the period flourish of Gould's. A weak impression. The fifth pillar has been removed.

There are two filled holes in the upper section of the dial plate beneath each corner spandrel. For some reason these have been highlighted by the application of a small amount of varnish on the movement side? The seatboard is a replacement. It is oak and is 20th century.

It is a timepiece so does not strike the hour. However it is pull-quarter repeat which allows the user to pull a cord which comes through the side to give the last hour and quarter. This mechanism works but the cord needs replacing as it's broken and too short to go through the case. The movement was formerly verge escapement and has been converted to anchor. There are no frets or glass to the sides. The left hand edge moulding of the pediment is loose. The dome joints are split, secure but could be improved. The dial silvering is a bit flat and the wax infill to the chapters is lost in places. The brass frets in the door spandrels are replaced. Dambuster relic, Large piece of the gear box from the Lancaster of John Vere Hopgood, DFC & Bar, which was shot down in the Dambuster Raid. Fixed to a wooden plinth and given to our vendor Jim Shortland 617 Sqn historian by Bill Townsend. Gibson selected Hopgood as his deputy for the attack against the Mohne Dam. While awaiting take off Hopgood spoke with Dave Shannon, telling him that he had had a premonition that he would not survive the mission. Gibson responded to the premonition with, Hoppy, tonights the night; tomorrow we will get drunk. Hopgood took off in the first group alongside Gibson and Mick Martin. It was on the journey to the Mohne that Hopgoods aircraft AJ M (M Mother) was hit by flak while passing the airfield at Dulmen. Hopgood along with gunners George Gregory and Tony Burcher were injured but they continued the attack. There is a possibility that Gregory was killed by flak at this point. The damaged aircraft reached the dam where they attacked at 00:32, ten minutes after Gibson. However, they were struck again by anti-aircraft fire and their bomb was released too late. It bounced over the dam and exploded on a power station on the other side. The aircraft was fatally damaged at this point and Hopgood remained at the controls, gaining height to allow his crew to bail out. Rear gunner, Pilot Officer Tony Burcher, remembered hearing Hopgood say; Get out you damn fool. If only I could get another 300 ft. I can't get any more height. John Fraser, John Minchin and Tony Burcher jumped, but the already injured Minchin did not survive. However, Fraser and Burcher survived and were made prisoners of war. AJ M crashed in a field near Ostonnen, 6 kilometres (3. 72 miles) from the dam. The bodies of Hopgood, Brennan, Navigator Kenneth (Ken) Earnshaw from Bridlington and Gregory were found inside. Good Condition. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99.

SCHREYVOGEL, CHARLES SCHREYVOGEL, CHARLES 1861 New York - 1912 Hoboken Titel: The Last Drop. A trapper with his horse, together they share the last remnants of the water supply. This archetypal version of the Lonesome Cowboy as a group of figures modelled and cast in bronze originally served the artist merely as a study model, after which he developed the painting of the same name, "The Last Drop", at the turn of the century, now in the Tacoma Art Museum (Tacoma, Washington). Charles Schreyvogel, born and died in the United States, came to Munich between 1886 and 1890 to study under his countryman Carl Marr, who later on became director of the academy of arts. Back in Hoboken he travelled from 1893 several times to the western part of the states to the Indian reservations there. The motifs he found there became his life theme, for which he is still highly regarded and sought after today. He became the painter of the Indians and cowboys, who documented the life in the American Wild West. Many of his works are exhibited in the museums there today. The bronze "The Last Drop", one of only very few three-dimensional pictorial works by the artist, went from being a mere study object to becoming famous in its own right. The numbered edition, produced in the New York foundry, can be found in numerous museums in the USA, including the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, Corning, New York and the Museum of Western Art, Denver, Colorado.
