Roman Lion TerminalCopper alloy, 17.35 grams. Length: 22.95 mm; width: 10.70 mm; height: 22.96 mm. Circa 1st-4th century AD. A terminal in the form of a stylised lion, laying with front limbs extended and head turned slightly right. The fur and mane are created by a series of engraved crescent shaped lines. It sits atop a plinth, with a slightly bulbous cube beneath and a smaller plinth below. At the base of the lowest plinth is a circular hole, in which there are traces of iron. This would suggest an iron shank extended below. Recorded on the PAS database as: ESS-C51476.Similar examples are published on the PAS database, cf. LVPL-B4BC19. There are references to similar examples having been found in Augst, Switzerland (Kaufmann-Heinimann, 1977, 28). The weight of the object however would make it unlikely to be a hairpin. One possible interpretation is that these are mounts for caskets or furniture, though no parallels have yet been found. Property of a metal detectorist.
