A triumph of mid-19th-century historical sculpture, it is considered today to be Marochetti's masterpiece. Emmanuel-Philibert (1528-1580) was known for his military prowess and political innovations which strengthened the power of the house of Savoy in Piedmont. The monumental equestrian group cast by Soyer et Ingé was inaugurated in Turin in 1838, following a brief exhibition outside the Louvre in Paris several months before, where it was greeted with great acclaim which furthered Marochetti's reputation in Parisian artistic circles. However Diehl settled in Paris in 1840 and established a large atelier at 39, rue Saint-Sebastien. Working in London's Denmark Square during the third quarter of the 19th century, Ross exhibited in the Great Exhibition of 1851.Ross's firm, which was located in Denmark Square in London, flourished during the third quarter of the 19th century. Also, Ross exhibited in the 1851 Great Exhibition alongside the most important designers and makers of the time. In 1928 Thomas Ross, who was Donald's son, wrote a letter addressed to the Victoria and Albert museum which refers to a related suite of Donald Ross furniture originally displayed at the Great Exhibition, which was subsequently sold to Queen Victoria via an agent called Freyburg.Some tables with virtually identical dot and trellis inlay are illustrated in C. A Vienna group of The Music Lesson, or Le Leçon de Flute, circa 1770, the young man and woman seated together, two dogs by their side, the group painted in delicate colouring, 23cm high, indistinct shield mark in blue, impressed potter's letter A/Provenance: from the Henry Sandon Study Collection CONDITION REPORT: With discoloured restoration to his left toes and foot and her right toes and foot, there is an aperture to the top of the plinth on the rockwork, there may be a missing urn or element which should fit into this aperture, there are faint firing and hairline cracks issuing from this aperture, the corner of this plinth is restored, the man's black hat is restored and overpainted. Some minor scratching and wear to enamels overall.

A mid-19th Century anodised brass Alphanumeric Indicator from Wilde's 1861 Globe Telegraph, of spherical form (or globular, to follow company name) with paper dial, needle indicator, winding arbor to dial rim, bell to back, with steel shaft and butterfly nut to secure to wooden plinth, plinth and transmitter missing, 100mm diam., 1861-1865, F, tear to dial; Dr Henry Wilde (1833-1919) developed various devices, including lightning conductors and electro-deposition devices, but his foray into telegraph instruments was brief following litigation; it is probable that a similar instrument, mounted on a figure of Atlas rather than a plain plinth, was exhibited at the 1862 International Exhibition in South Kensington.

A French two-train mantel clock with a cast bronze style figure playing a flute next to a tree. A brass plaque below is engraved "Improvisateur Par Ferrand". The figure is raised on an onyx base with onyx plinth and raised claw feet. The clock below the figure has a 3" dial with Arabic numerals, signed R & W Bird, Paris, surrounded by a cast bezel decorated with flowers and swags.Dimensions: 18" x 10" x 6".Condition: Rear cast foot broken and missing its claw. Onyx plinth is cracked, some small pieces have dropped off but are present. No other damage apparent. Clock movement not tested
