August Gaul 1869 Großauheim bei Hanau - 1921 BerlinDrei Pinguine. 1903/1911.Bronze, schwarzbraun patiniert, teils vergoldet. Gabler 107-1. Seitlich auf der Plinthe mit dem Namenszug `A.Gaul`. 17,5 x 20,5 x 14 cm (6,8 x 8 x 5,5 in), Gesamthöhe 23,5 cm. Auf schwarzem Marmorsockel.1903 fertigt August Gaul einen Brunnenentwurf mit zwei Seelöwen und zwei Pinguingruppen für die Stadt Münster. Jedoch wird dieser Entwurf vom Oberregierungspräsidenten aufgrund der Tierauswahl, die nichts mit Münster zu tun habe, abgelehnt. Auch ein zweiter Entwurf Gauls mit Auerochsen findet keinen Anklang in Münster, jedoch lässt das Preußische Ministerium diesen Brunnen stattdessen in Königsberg aufstellen. Die beiden Seelöwen-Figuren des ersten Brunnenentwurfes werden 1903 in kleiner Form von der Porzellanmanufaktur Meißen in Porzellan und Böttgersteinzeug ausgeführt. Künstlerischer Leiter in Meißen war zu dieser Zeit der mit Gaul befreundete Bildhauer Max Esser. Erst 1911 greift Gaul auch eine der Pinguingruppen wieder auf. Da er sie anders als die Seelöwen deutlich überarbeitet, kann sie als eigenständiges Werk angesehen werden. Nachdem Gaul bereits bei der Fischotter-Bronze im Jahr 1902 kleine Partien der Oberfläche vergoldete, nutzt er diese Technik bei den Pinguinen nun großflächig für die feine, charakteristische Fellzeichnung der Tiere. Dabei zeigt er seine besonderen Fähigkeiten, die er als Jugendlicher während seiner Ausbildung zum Ziseleur lernte. Dass Gaul sich gut acht Jahre nach dem Münsteraner Brunnenentwurf wieder mit der Pinguingruppe befasst, mag im Zusammenhang mit einem weiteren Brunnenauftrag stehen. 1911 erwirbt der Berliner Industrielle und Kunstsammler Franz Oppenheim über den Kunsthändler Paul Cassirer einen Brunnen mit vier Pinguinen von August Gaul, der speziell für den Garten seiner Wannsee-Villa angefertigt wird. Auch hier findet sich bei den in Bronze ausgeführten Tieren wieder die charakteristische Vergoldung, die jedoch für eine Außenaufstellung sehr ungewöhnlich ist. Ein weiteres Mal fertigt Gaul ab 1914 einen weiteren Pinguinbrunnen für den Hamburger Stadtpark. A Moorcroft pottery pin dish, decorated with poppy, a Moorcroft pottery bottle shaped vase decorated with poppy, a Staffordshire pottery spill vase of a milkmaid and cow, a Staffordshire pottery spaniel and a Derby vase raised on four paw feet to shaped plinth base (cover missing) CONDITION REPORTS Moorcroft vase approx 23.5cm high - light general but overall appears OK. Pin dish 11.5cm diameter - some light general wear and scuffs, overall appears OK. Derby vase with chips and cracks. Spaniel with chips, crazing. Spill vase with crazing, wear, some frits and appears to have some restoration to neck.
A 19th Century French alabaster cased mantel clock by P D of Paris, the drum movement with white enamelled dial and Roman numerals on scroll supports flanking a cherub pendulum, housed under an oval glass dome, on an ebonised plinth base CONDITION REPORTS Height of dome including black base approx 31cm. Dome is a slightly different size and shape to the base, and appears to be associated. Base with old woodworm holes and various alterations. Clock with back plate missing, and various scuffs and chips throughout and heavy scuffing to the top. It is not known whether complete nor whether or not in working order.
An American oak pedestal desk, the central drawer flanked by two drawers over two banks of three drawers to a plinth base, together with a table lamp in the form of a Classical maiden with a bronzed finish, and a vintage Frister & Rossmann sewing machine in parquetry decorated wooden case CONDITION REPORTS 137cm wide x 58cm deep x 76cm high approx. The top with loss to the varnished finish and appear to have been sanded down. Some separating at joins especially between the inner section of the top and the shaped outer border. Rest of desk with various scuffs and scratches, knocks and chips, and plinth quite heavily scuffed. One of the drawers does appear to fit its runner and may need some repair. Desk appears to constructed as a single unit (ie pedestals not removeable).
A 19th Century mahogany kneehole desk, the rectangular top with tooled and gilded leather insert over a central drawer flanked by two further drawers over two banks of three graduated drawers on a plinth base CONDITION REPORTS Approx 135cm wide x 74cm deep x 74cm high. Overall with general wear and scuffs, some fading. Some splits and chips. Quite a lot of scuffing to plinth, and to edges and drawer fronts. Handles may be replacements. Desk appears to be in three parts, comprising a top section and two pedestals.
A Victorian mahogany "Scotch" chest, the shaped slim long drawer over two short drawers over three long graduated drawers to a plinth base CONDITION REPORTS Size approx. 122 cm wide x 54 cm x 116 cm high. Overall with general wear and scuffs, top appears to have been replaced and/or re-finished, some fading to drawers, some chips, splits and losses to mouldings, some mouldings coming slightly loose, drawers appear to open and close fairly well though may require attention to some of the runners, overall appears in reasonably tidy condition.
