Ian Fleming and James Bond interest - A honey oak roll top desk 1930s-40s, made by Sol Nott, a Leeds cabinet maker, the tambour front enclosing an interior with an arrangement of eighteen various pigeonholes and stationary slots, over a concealed kneehole drawer and three graduated drawers to each pedestal with central bar handles, on recessed plinth bases, 52½in. (133.25cm.) wide, 28¾in. (73cm.) deep, 39½in. (100.5cm.) high. * This desk was the property of Geoffrey Appleyard, a WW2 Special Operations agent who is believed by some to have been one of four men who became the inspiration for Ian Fleming`s character James Bond. Fleming was personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence during WW2 and in late 1941 his job was to act as a liaison between the Royal Navy and SOE, working with the Operation Postmaster team of four men, including Appleyard, Captain Gus March-Phillips, Graham Hayes and the Dane Anders Lassen before their daring raid to steal three enemy ships from the port of Santa Isabel on the neutral Spanish island of Fernando Po, off the West African coast.
