TWO BRONZE SEALS EDO PERIOD, 18TH OR 19TH CENTURY The first in three parts fitting inside each other, modelled as a sage seated in a pavilion beneath a rocky outcrop from which grow pines, with some remnants of gilt; all three matrices cut with characters, one inscribed Kihan Seshin (a retainer at the Kishu domain) and Kuki Shi In (seal of Kuki, a noble name); the other seal shaped as a double gourd raised on a square plinth, with scrolling tendrils and smaller fruits growing from the stalk, the matrix left uncut; 4.7cm and 4.3cm respectively. A JAPANESE POLYCHROME LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF JIZO BOSATSU KAMAKURA PERIOD OR LATER, 14TH CENTURY OR LATER Depicted standing on a rectangular plinth and wearing loose robes, the eyes inlaid in glass and his garments painted in gold, red and dark blue, with long lines of inscriptions in gilt to the front, 48cm. Provenance: from a deceased estate, Hampshire. Purchased from Gerard Hawthorn Ltd, 22nd October 2002 for £4,000, and illustrated in G Hawthorn, Chinese and Japanese Sculpture, no.19. A JAPANESE LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF AMIDA NYORAI (AMIDA BUDDHA) MUROMACHI PERIOD OR LATER, 16TH CENTURY OR LATER Standing on an octagonal plinth and wearing long flowing robes loosely draped across his torso, the eyes downcast in a serene expression, his hands in the kubon mudra representing one of the nine levels of rebirth; with a glass or crystal urna on his forehead and a wooden bead amongst his knotted hair signifying spiritual elevation, ushnisa, with remnants of gold lacquer, the robes embellished with scrolls and asa-no-ha patterns, together with a tomobako wood box, the figure 39.5cm. (4) Amida Buddha is represented performing the kubon mudra when welcoming the souls of the departed as they reach the Great Western Paradise. Sculptures and paintings depicting this subject became popular during the 12th century and were placed near the beds of dying devotees to bring them comfort.
TWO LARGE WOOD NETSUKE OF SHISHI EDO AND MEIJI PERIODS, 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES The first lion dog depicted on an octagonal plinth, each side with an inscription; the beast bares its fangs in a snarl as a multitude of small chidori birds perch on its back, signed underneath; the second shishi sitting on its haunches and scratching its ear with its hind leg, unsigned, 4.2cm and 5.5cm respectively. (2) Provenance: from the collection of a lady of title, and thence by descent. See Japanese Works of Art, 1st July 2020, for the first part of this private collection of netsuke sold in these rooms.

A massive pair of recumbent Great Danes, a Limited Edition No. 021 of 100 produced by Triton 2001, one with the front paw crossed and facing slightly left, wearing a metal collar, the other facing slightly right and four paws facing ahead each moulded on a large rectangular moulded plinth, 72''h x 68''l x 29''d (183cms x 173cms x 74cms).
