A late Victorian rosewood and gilt metal mounted credenza with curved ends, the frieze inlaid with stylised leaf banding and with gilt bead mouldings, the centre enclosed by a single arched panelled door inlaid in boxwood with oval paterae flanked by twin turned columns with Corinthian capitols, and display cabinets each fitted two cloth lined shelves enclosed by a bow-fronted glazed door, on plinth base with gilt mouldings and six turned bun feet, 68ins wide x 17ins deep x 42.5ins high
An early Victorian figured mahogany regulator by John Leyland, the 13ins diameter heavy silvered brass dial inscribed "Morrison of London", with central hour and seconds dial, to the eight day single train movement with dead beat escapement, heavy brass plates stamped to front plate "J.L 969 (for John Leyland), and four heavy turned pillars, the ebonised wood pendulum shaft with heavy brass bob, contained in figured mahogany case with arched top, square top, triangular astragal mouldings, glazed trunk door flanked by plain cant corners and with cross banded base with moulded double plinth, 81ins high Note: John Leyland was a son of Thomas Leyland. Both father and son made high quality movements for a number of well known makers. In particularly Condliff of Liverpool. There movements were always of finest quality and it is interesting to note that although the clock spent most of its life in a Jewellers shop in London, the case dial as well as the fact that the movement is by John Leyland would suggest a North County area of manufacture. A mid-19th Century brass Skeleton timepiece probably by Evans of Handsworth in the form of The Scott Memorial, the 7.25ins diameter fretted silvered dial with Roman numeral cartouches, the heavy twin brass framed single train chain and fusee with balance escapement, the framework of fretted Gothic pattern and with gilt metal seated figure of Walter Scott and his dog, on rectangular plinth, 20.5ins high, mounted on white marble two-tiered oval base, with bun feet and with oval glass dome, 26ins high Note: In 1805 Boulton & Watt of The Soho Foundry, Handsworth, Birmingham decided to discontinue the manufacture of clocks and handed this side of the business over to John Houghton, who had been their foreman. Houghton established himself in Soho Street and called the business "The Soho Clock Factory" where trade flourished and in due course his son-in-law William Frederick Evans joined him. Houghton retired in 1843 leaving Evans to run the business, and died some 20 years later. Full details of William Frederick Evans and the description of these clocks and pictures are to be found on pages 61 to 63 and 123 to 156 of "Skeleton Clocks - Britain 1800-1914" by Derek Roberts. An early 18th Century walnut longcase clock by Nathaniel Tilly of London, the 12ins arched brass dial with wide chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and calendar dial to arch, both with matted dial centres, to the eight day two train movement striking on a bell, contained in figured walnut veneered case, the hood with square top and deep arched moulding above fretted frieze and with plain term pillars, the arched trunk door inlaid with herringbone bandings, with cross banded base with double plinth, 92ins high, (all in need of restoration - later fretted frieze to hood lacking calendar indicator and the whole case generally in need of restoration) Note: Nathaniel Tilly was the son of Nathaniel (a clothier) in Somerset. He was apprentice to Robert Halstead at The Crown and Dial in Fleet Street, London for seven years in 1714.
An Edward VII silver circular rose bowl, the sides embossed with part reeding, bead work, fruit and leaf scroll ornament, two shaped cartouches and with moulded rim and footrim, 7.5ins diameter x 5.25ins high, by George Nathan and Ridley Hayes, Chester 1905, (weight 14.5ozs - with presentation inscription, dated July 1907), and ebonised plinth for same
