Chinese Hardstone Mtd. Bronze Elephant Candlestick Now mounted as a lamp, Qing Dynasty, 18th/19th Century. The elaborately dressed elephant incised with circular scrolls suggesting the elephant’s hair, supporting a howdah, all applied with coral and turquoise cabochons, the elephant surmounted by a vessel-form candle nozzle, on a shaped rectangular plinth similarly decorated, drilled. Height 12 in., overall, 24 in., Width 9 ½ in., Depth 6 in.
Chinese Carved Stone Elderly Scholar. Qing Dynasty. 18th/19th Century. The gray stone carved to depict a bearded robed Scholar or Sage, doning a ceremonial cylindrical hat, with arms folded grasping a scroll, his gaze is forward focused with stern expressive features, on a stone plinth. Size: 4 1/2 x 3 1/4 x 12 1/2 in.
Persia, Ca. 11th century AD A stone relief of Manticore - a legendary, mythical monszter with the body of a lion with a human head, and a porcupine or scorpion tail. Manticore comes from Persia, where its name means "eating people". The Persians invented this creature to scare merchants trying to use their trade routes. This fine example is depicted in a crouching position with its legs hidden under the short body. The head bears skilfully carved face details with deep-set eyes, broad nose, and arching brows, and is framed with an abundant, curly mane. The beast lies on a high, flat-bottomed plinth with both sides decorated with trefoil palmettes, and its backside features pairs of further zoomorphic creatures in low relief.Size: L:180mm / W:240mm ; 8.35KgProvenance: Private London collection of Early Islamic Art - M.A.; formerly acquired on the UK art market since the 1980s.
Unusual Chinese Patinated Bronze Censor. Late 19th Century. The spherical body reserved with birds, the sides with winged dragon handles, with a compound neck continuing up to a wide flared rim, on tall slender tripod legs entwined with serpents, atop a three-part stacked base, with scrolled feet and hexagonal plinth, probably adapted. Size: 9 x 6 1/2 x 19 5/8 in.

The gilt over red lacquer carved wood Buddha seated cross-legged on a carved wood plinth, the covering cloth draped over one shoulder, poised in Dhyana mudra with the right hand at his side, pointing to the ground, with palm facing inward towards the Buddha, the left hand on his lap holding an alms bowl, highlighted with multi-colored glass insets. Height 34 in., Width 29 in., Depth 22 in. Cf. The most common pose found for Buddhas in Thai temples, as on the offer lot, and on other Buddhas in this sale, is with the left hand in the lap, and the right hand pointing to the ground with the palm facing inward toward the Buddha. This posture is known as, “Calling The Earth to Witness”, and it is the definition of the moment of enlightenment for the Buddha.
