He is noted for his relatively short production period due to an illness which led him to being an invalid for the last forty years of his life. Furse studied under Herkomer before attending the Slade School. He worked at the British Museum from 1881 to 1887, after which he produced many sculptures, most notably of animals though also human subjects, as in this example. His keen observational eye allowed him to capture the subtleties of movement into a static object, as though they were about to come alive. His works were regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts as well as other well-known galleries.
