A MASSIVE PLASTER CAST OF A SECTION OF THE PORCH OF THE MAIDENS, FROM THE ERECHTEION, ATHENS20TH CENTURY, AFTER THE ANTIQUEShowing two draped caryatids, supporting the entablature and raised on an egg-and-dart moulded plinthThe caryatids standing approximately 230cm tall, commensurate with the original marblesBase approximately 245cm wideCatalogue Note: The Erechtheion is a 5th century BC marble temple on the North side of the Acropolis, Athens, built chiefly in the Ionic order. It was dedicated to multiple deities, including Athena (to whom the eastern part of the temple was devoted), as well as Poseidon and also Boutes, a local hero. Below it stood the grave of Kekrops, a celebrated King of Athens. A building inscription of the Erechtheion refers to the Caryatids simply as Korai (maidens), while the designation 'Caryatids' came later. The second caryatid from the western section was removed by Lord Elgin in 1801 and is in the collection of the British Museum. The present lot is derived from historic casts, including from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (cornice and plinth), visible in early 20th century photographs of the museum's hall of casts, and by repute the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Denmark (the maidens). This plaster is illustrated in E. Marchand and Rune Frederiksen, Plaster Casts, de Gruyter, 2010, p. 629.Condition Report: Usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age. Some losses to upper moulding, and areas of possible retouching or repair to the edge of the plinth. Tiny segments of a pine core are visible to the underside of the entablature. There are areas of fragmentary rendering or loss of definition but this is likely commensurate with the original after which this is modelled. The work is very large and has as such not been moved for inspection. The structure and rear of the lot have not been inspected. The piece is set before a painted backboard simulating stone. Condition Report Disclaimer

A PLASTER CAST OF A TABLET FROM THE BASE FROM TRAJAN'S COLUMNROME, AFTER THE ANTIQUEWith lettering 'SENATVS POPVLVS QVE ROMANVS/..., in three sections, each numbered 13A... 14...126cm high, 129cm wideCatalogue Note: The present lot is cast from a Victorian model attributed to D. Brucciani & Co, which in all likelihood was in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum. Trajan's column is a Roman triumphal column which commemorates the Emperor Trajan's victories in the Dacian wars. It was completed circa 113AD. The V&A's iconic cast of the full-length column has been in its collection since the opening of the cast courts in 1873. While the column frieze was cast during the 1860s, the museum's cast of the square plinth, from which the present lot is derived, appears to have been supplied later, in 1872. The casts of this section were completed by a Mr M. Maitre, to the cost of 5,000 francs. Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Various old chips of loss - see image. Painted to simulate greater age. Later screws applied to help secure with filler used to disguise holes. This will need to be removed in order to move the item. AFTER PAUL DUBOIS (FRENCH, 1829-1905), A LARGE PLASTER SECTION OF THE EQUESTRIAN STATUE OF JOAN OF ARCLATE 19TH/FIRST HALF 20TH CENTURY, AFTER A CIRCA 1896 ORIGINALFragmentary, showing the body and legs of the horse, with ornamented tack, and a section of the rider, on an integral rectangular plinth inscribed P. DUBOIS to the maquette, 220cm high, 210cm long, 90cm wideProvenance: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New YorkUntil sold at Sotheby's New York, Historic Casts from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 28 February 2006, lot 108 (misidentified as a section from the Colleoni monument)This model, with its distinctive tack to the neck and flanks, is derived from French monumental sculptor Dubois' renowned equestrian statue of Joan of Arc, of which several bronze versions exist, including in Paris, Reims and Washington, USA. The present plaster is thought to have been cast after the version at Reims. This successful and widely disseminated model by the sculptor actually started life in plaster, when it was exhibited at the Salon in 1889 (entry no. 4320). It has been suggested that the statue offered here represents part of this initial version erected during that year.Other sketches and casts of the work in the medium of plaster are known, including in the collection of the Musee Camille Claudel (in Nogent-sur-Seine, the birthplace of Dubois), as well as the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek in Copenhagen.Condition Report: As catalogued this lot is fragmentary.
