An ancient Egyptian, New Kingdom era (c.1550BC - 1069BC) granite head of a man, possibly a local official. Believed to have been excavated at the necropolis at Thebes in Egypt. Provenance: presented to Lieutenant, later Captain Rosslyn Bower (1920-1991), who was stationed in Egypt as part of the Royal Indian Army Service Corps in 1943. And thus by descent through the family. An original card tag attached to the piece reads: ‘Cairo, Egypt 1943. Farewell gift to Ross from the curator of the Cairo museum. Tutankhamen head. Believed to have come from the excavations in the necropolis at Thebes’. Included is a recessed wooden block mount, with copper strap, that allows the head to sit upright. Captain Bower’s service record confirms him being stationed in Cairo at the time of the presentation of the head. The Theban necropolis sits upon the West Bank of the Nile, in the area of what is now Luxor, and was used extensively for ritual burials. The head was formerly assessed in 1999 by Sotheby’s, with a view to selling the piece. Approximately 18cm high on the wooden plinth, 12.5cm height without the plinth. Condition: generally good. A can been observed in the images, the left shoulder area of the bust is absent, hence the requirement fro the strap to hold it level. Some loss to the top right hand side of the headdress area. Normal striations are present in the granite, plus some age related surface fractures. The wooden plinth shows some wear and surface scratching from contact with the bust, but is nevertheless solid.

Francesco Fanelli, 1577 Florenz – um 1657 Paris, zug.HERKULESKNABE ALS SCHLANGENBEZWINGERHöhe: 23 cm. Breite: 13 cm. Gesamthöhe inkl. Holzsockel: 31 cm.Auf runder Plinthe.Bronzeguss, schwarz patiniert. A.R. Literatur: Varie Architekture, Francesco Fanelli, florentinischer Bildhauer des Königs von Großbritannien, ca. 1620-1665, mit einundzwanzig Tafeln gestochen von William Faithorne, in Paris 1661.Franca Franchini Guelfi, Fanelli Francesco, in: Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, Bd. 44, 1994. (1391432) (11)Francesco Fanelli,1577 Florence – ca. 1663 Paris, attributedTHE INFANT HERCULES STRANGLING SERPENTSHeight: 23 cm. Width: 13 cm. Total height incl. wooden base: 31 cm.On round plinth.Bronze casting with black patina. The discovery of the ancient marble group of Laocoon, which also holds up the serpent, undoubtedly inspired the present design. The model was first attributed to Fanelli by Charles Avery and Anthony Ratcliffe in the 1980s, based on the casting held at the Baron Hatvany collection. A connection was seen with a drawing depicting a fountain with the figure of Hercules, shown in Varie Architecture from 1661, in reference to Queen Henrietta-Maria´s palace in Wimbledon, commenced in 1639. Examples are held at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, at the Louvre (inv. 33540) in Paris and a similar example at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
Willem van den Broeck, zug.1530 – 1579/80ANATOMISCHE BRONZE-STANDFIGUR DES HERKULESHöhe: 45 cm. Gesamthöhe inkl. Holzsockel: 53 cm.Bronzeguss, dunkle Patina. Literatur: Vgl. Broeck, Guillaume van den, in: Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon. On a round, cast-in plinth. Hercules´ right leg bent on a tree stump, over which the skin of the “Nemean lion”, which he had defeated, is laid with the lion´s head. The figure corresponds to other versions, for example in terracotta, as an example held at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna shows. Among other things, the sculptor is also known for three statues in the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp, where he became a free master of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1557. An alabaster relief, Calvary, is held at the Louvre and a Garden of Eden in Brussels.
