Tell Berlin circa 1923 the twin cupboard doors enclosing a shelf the solid supports with mid tier and plinth base 145cm high by 130cm. wide by 40cm. deep Provenance 1938 - 1969 Phaidon Press London Purchased by the vendor Phillips London 12th June 1990 lot 295. A settee and armchair from this set is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum London. A further two armchairs and a coffee table are in the collection of Temple Newsam House formerly on display in the library at Lotherton Hall Aberford. Dame Ellen Alicia Terry (1847 - 1828) made her stage debut at the age of nine playing the boy Mamillius in Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale. Her most sensational success as an actress was as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing and she appeared in several works by George Bernard Shaw. She lectured on Shakespeare in England the U.S.A. and Canada and in 1925 was created a Dame of the British Empire. Sir John Gielgud (1904 - 2000) continued the family tradition of Shakespearean interpretations but he is also known for more contemporary roles. He played with Noel Coward and Graham Greene and his success continued on screen with directors such as Lawrence Olivier and Orson Welles. He was knighted in 1953 and appointed a Companion of Honour in 1977.
